Novak Djokovic Provides Update On Schedule For 2024 And ‘25

Novak Djokovic fell short of winning his 100th career title on Sunday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, but said he will play again this season and in 2025.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion failed to join Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer in the 100-title club when he lost to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the final.

While Sinner has won seven titles in 2024, including the Australian Open and the U.S. Open, Djokovic failed to win a major this year although he did win the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

The Serb said he plans to play next week in Saudi Arabia, and will then make a decision about the rest of his season, including the Paris Masters (Oct. 26-Nov. 3). He currently ranks No. 6 in the ATP Race to Turin.

“The plan is to go home, I mean, actually, Saudi, Six Kings Slam is happening next week, so I’m playing that, then I’ll see where I play next,” he said.

Rafael Nadal, who announced last week he will retire at next month’s Davis Cup finals, will also play in Saudi Arabia.

Djokovic, the world No. 4, insisted he plans “to compete and play next season” despite his latest defeat.

“I don’t know what future brings, I’ll just, you know, try to kind of go with the flow to see how I feel in a given moment,” he said. “I still plan to compete and play next season and, yeah, let’s see how far I go.”

He remains tied with Margaret Court at 24 majors, and surely would like to win No. 25 to end as the all-time leader in men’s and women’s tennis.

“Yeah, I mean, my main motivation comes from love and passion for the sport, and also the desire to keep competing,” Djokovic said. “These are kind of the matches and challenges that I still strive for.”

He added: “To be in a position to play against the best players in the world, on the biggest stage, in the finals of some of the biggest tournaments in the world.”

Still, Federer, who attended the Shanghai Masters and sat next to Alcaraz for the final, said the success that Alcaraz and Sinner had this year is evidence that the top of the game is “shifting.”

“Serena retiring. Andy Murray retiring,” he said. “Rafa getting closer. Novak having a tough year, then winning Olympics was incredible. You feel like everything is shifting. Sinner and Alcaraz each winning two Slams shows that the wave is truly coming.”

How Djokovic fits into that wave going forward remains to be seen.
