Mo Salah is set to return to Liverpool after pulling out of the Egypt squad ahead of their Tuesday night match against Mauritania.
The 32-year-old Egypt captain traveled to Cairo earlier this week to join his national team.
The Egypt captain celebrated his most recent goal for his country.
He found the net in his team’s 2-0 win over Mauritania last night during their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
On Tuesday, the Pharaohs will face another qualifier away from home, but they’ll be without their star player.
A statement from the Egyptian FA said: “The technical staff of Egypt’s national football team, led by coach Hossam Hassan, held a meeting with Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs’ captain.
“During the meeting, it was decided to give the player a rest for the upcoming match.”
Salah’s withdrawal is due to concerns over Mauritania’s pitch and playing style.
Tuesday’s match will be held at the 8,200-capacity Cheikha Ould Boidiya Stadium in Nouakchott, which has an artificial turf.
Following the win last night, Egypt manager Hossam Hassan acknowledged the likelihood of being without his star player for Tuesday’s game and described their opponents as “aggressive.”
