England were dealt a surprise UEFA Nations League defeat at home to Greece on a night where Erling Haaland also became Norway’s record male goalscorer.
City’s number nine grabbed a brace against Slovenia in a 3-0 win in Oslo, with the second of those strikes taking his tally to a record 34 goals in 36 appearances.
The forward opened the scoring early on before former Crystal Palace forward Alexander Sorloth doubled the advantage soon after the restart.
Haaland made it three with his second on the hour, breaking his nation’s male goalscoring record in the process and sending his nation top of Group B3 in Oslo.
Three of the Blues’ England contingent, meanwhile, started at Wembley Stadium in a battle for top spot in Group B2, with John Stones wearing the captain’s armband.
He started at centre-half with Rico Lewis also figuring in the Three Lions’ back-line, while Phil Foden started in Lee Carsley’s front three.
John Stones made a great block to deflect a shot wide. Beaten far too easily for the opening goal however – one of several that applies to. Not the leader he should have been.
Rico Lewis is very calm and generally solid for the most part – looks like the part whenever he’s playing. Quite possibly the now-and-future answer at left-back, but was involved in the mix-up at the end to gift another goal.
Foden couldn’t really find his role in the system England started with. There were sporadic moments of link up with Bellingham but Greece closed the spaces pretty easily.
Jeremy Doku helped Belgium to a battling 2-2 draw at Italy in Group A2.
Looked short of options at times when receiving the ball on the right flank in the first-half, but looked much better after switching to the left side in the second half. Was unlucky not to come away with a goal or an assist.
Finally, Ederson and Savinho both start for Brazil vs Chile in FIFA World Cup qualification
An assist and 68 minutes of action for Savinho tonight in Brazil’s 1-2 comeback win vs Chile. Ederson completed the full 90
Hard to blame Ederson on the opener. Otherwise solid and reliable.
Savinho has brilliant assist on Jesus’ strike and some top footwork as well. Great performance.
