Cowboys May Finally Add WR They Once Pursued Trade for!

The Cowboys are bringing in former Baylor star Denzel Mims for a workout Tuesday.
Dallas Cowboys v Pittsburgh Steelers

The Dallas Cowboys will be without veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks for at least the next four games after being placed on injured reserve ahead of their Week 5 primetime game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Without Cooks, the Cowboys hope for their core of young wide receivers (Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks, KaVontae Turpin, and Ryan Flournoy) to emerge over the next few weeks. They are still exploring outside options before next month’s trade deadline.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, former Baylor star receiver Denzel Mims is working out for the Cowboys on Tuesday. Mims spent training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who cut him ahead of the 53-man roster deadline in August.

Coincidentally, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard the Cowboys being interested in the former second-round pick. Josina Anderson reported last year that the New York Jets previously had exploratory trade talks with the Cowboys about potential interest involving Mims.

The former second-round pick was ultimately traded to the Detroit Lions, who then waived him due to injury. After his short stint with Detroit, Mims was signed to the Steelers practice squad in Oct. 2023 and received a futures/reserve contract at the end of the 2023 season.

Mims was with the Steelers until June but was then waived and picked up by the Jaguars. The former Baylor standout has struggled to make his mark in the NFL as he only has 42 receptions (92 targets) for 676 yards in 30 career games.

However, if he can lockdown a practice squad spot with the Cowboys, it could unlock something for Mims.
