The Dallas Cowboys were paper thin at defensive end—one of this team’s clear positions of strength leading up to the regular season—even before Marshawn Kneeland left Sunday’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers with a knee injury.
Now that the rookie is set to undergo surgery for a lateral meniscus tear, joining perennial Defensive Player of the Year contender Micah Parsons and impact veteran DeMarcus Lawrence on the sidelines, conventional wisdom suggests Dallas will seek pass-rush reinforcements leading up to the NFL’s Nov. 5 trade deadline.
Owner Jerry Jones, though, apparently sees the Cowboys’ rash of injuries at defensive end as just another opportunity for the next man up.
Speaking with media on Tuesday, Jones pushed back on the idea that Dallas is engaged in a “soft rebuild” while downplaying the need for additional help on the defensive line via trade.
“The (only) positive of losing a player is that a young player, usually your depth, is going to get some reps, a player that can get better for the future,” Jones told reporters, per Jon Machota of The Athletic.
Kneeland, Dallas’ second-round pick out of Western Michigan, is expected to return at some point this season despite initial fears he’d torn his ACL. Still, he’ll surely join Lawrence—dealing with a Lisfranc injury to his foot—on the sidelines in street clothes for at least the next few weeks.
Parsons, meanwhile, didn’t play in Sunday’s win over Pittsburgh due to an ankle injury suffered the previous week. His status for Sunday’s clash with the Detroit Lions is “iffy,” Jones said.
Dallas, 3-2, kicks off against the 3-1 Lions from Cowboys Stadium at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
