LeBron James and his son Bronny James offered high praise for Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht following his impressive performance in the team’s preseason opener on Friday. Despite the Lakers’ 124-107 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, California, Knecht stood out with a notable display.

Knecht tied with Austin Reaves as the Lakers’ leading scorer, contributing 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, including 2-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Though LeBron James sat out the game, he observed Knecht’s performance from the sidelines.

As LeBron prepared for the Lakers’ second preseason game against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, the four-time NBA champion praised the rookie’s potential.

James expressed confidence that Knecht was ready for the challenges of the best basketball league in the world.

“He’s a pro. He’s ready to go now,” LeBron told media after Lakers practice on Saturday.

Bronny James, who shared the court with Dalton Knecht on Friday, also praised his fellow rookie. Bronny described Knecht as an “amazing player” and expressed his admiration for the former Tennessee standout.

“I saw a lot of great things (last night). He’s an amazing player. I love that guy,” Bronny told reporters.

Knecht was highly engaged on both ends of the floor in the game against the Timberwolves. Known for his elite three-point shooting, the 23-year-old showcased his versatility as more than just a sharpshooter.

The former Tennessee standout scored at all three levels, whether driving to the rim with authority, pulling up from mid-range, or hitting shots from beyond the arc. Knecht also made an extra effort defensively, recording a steal and a block in his preseason debut.

JJ Redick on Dalton Knecht’s defense

Lakers coach JJ Redick highlighted an area where Dalton Knecht needs to focus in order to secure a consistent spot in his rotation.

Redick emphasized the importance of Knecht staying engaged on the defensive end and letting the game come to him naturally, without forcing plays.

“If he’s (Knecht) gonna play in this team, play in the rotation, and play minutes this year, he knows this, he’s gotta compete defensively,” said Redick.

“Sometimes the game can speed up for him a little bit, and that reflects itself in some turnovers,” the Lakers coach added.

Knecht will aim to build on his strong performance from Friday as the Lakers prepare to take on the Kevin Durant-led Phoenix Suns.
