The NY Jets have seemed like the obvious landing spot for Davante Adams since the six-time Pro Bowler requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders this week. That’s why many were thrown for a loop following Adams’ cryptic social media post on Friday.
Adams shared a completely unprompted image of famous poet Edgar Allan Poe to his Instagram account on Friday, sparking a sea of speculation amongst NFL fans. Poe is famously the author of “The Raven” and has close ties to the Baltimore Ravens franchise.
The Ravens have been mentioned as a possible trade destination for Adams, so fans understandably jumped to some conclusions following his latest social media activity. Jets fans, in particular, didn’t handle the news well.
The good news for Jets fans is that this may be much ado about nothing. NFL insider Josina Anderson is reporting that there’s “nothing going on” between the Ravens and Raiders about a potential Adams trade.
This is, of course, always subject to change, and perhaps Adams is hinting at the Ravens being one of his preferred landing spots. But as far as the trade market is concerned, nothing appears to be imminent.
Should NY Jets fans be concerned about the Ravens trading for Davante Adams?
The Jets have long seemed like the most likely destination for Adams in the event of a trade, primarily due to the Aaron Rodgers connection. The team previously inquired about an Adams trade at the deadline last year and this past offseason but was met with hesitancy on both occasions.
That’s no longer the case. The Raiders are motivated to find a trade partner and Adams is motivated to leave Las Vegas. The Jets and Raiders have reportedly been in contact for at least a week at this stage.
While Adams won’t be traded to the Jets before their Week 5 game against the Minnesota Vikings in London on Sunday, reports suggest talks could heat up next week. This situation is moving fast.
The Jets aren’t the only team alive in Adams’ trade market, however. The Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Buffalo Bills, and others have all been connected to Adams trade rumors over the last few days. The Jets aren’t bidding against themselves.
Adams also doesn’t have a no-trade clause, so while his desired destination might impact negotiations a little, he doesn’t have the power to simply decide where he lands. The Raiders still want to receive fair value in return.
That reported value could be anywhere from a second-round pick or more to a package of mid-round draft picks depending on how his market develops.
Despite Adams’ mysterious social media activity, the Jets still appear to be the odds-on favorites to trade for the All-Pro wide receiver. That will remain the case until proven otherwise. Jets fans can breathe a sigh of relief…for now.
