The Miami Dolphins are struggling mightily with QB Tua Tagovailoa sidelined by a concussion, and the team’s most recent solution to his absence proved as much of a non-answer as the two that came before it.
Tyler Huntley started his first game for the franchise on Monday Night Football, losing to the previously winless Tennessee Titans by a score of 31-12 in primetime. Huntley finished the game 14-of-22 passing for 96 yards, took 2 sacks and finished with a QBR of 12.1.
Miami is now 1-3 and on the brink of a lost season, which could create a call to action in the front office to add a new quarterback capable of taking advantage of what should be a high-octane offense full of speed and talent at the skill positions.
There are a handful of possibilities, though Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department on September 30 suggested trading with the Carolina Panthers for 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young.
“The Dolphins and Bryce Young would both take back the starts of their seasons if they could,” B/R wrote. “The Panthers are reportedly not looking to trade [Young] after benching him. However, the Dolphins are a team in a position to potentially overpay for him in a trade based on need. If anyone can help Young succeed in the league, it’s a Mike McDaniel type of coach who understands how to minimize his quarterback’s deficiencies.”
The Panthers benched Young in favor of Andy Dalton after Week 2 in a move that shocked much of the NFL universe.
It is hard to fathom a future in which Young returns to his former status as the future of the franchise in Carolina, and Miami is now officially desperate for a new signal-caller, which could create a recipe for a deal to get done quickly.
