Promising Steelers CB finds himself in an all too familiar situation following hamstring injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers had their day off on Tuesday, but for Coach Tomlin and GM Omar Khan, it was another day of shuffling the orster amidst injuries.

And while it seems the team dodged a bullet when it came to Alex Highsmith , the same thing can’t be said for CB Cory Trice Jr.

Trice to I.R.

The Steelers signed offensive tackle Calvin Anderson to the 53-man roster, signed defensive back James Pierre from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and placed defensive back Cory Trice Jr. on the Reserve/Injured List. The team also signed linebacker Marcus Haynes to the practice squad and released tight end Matt Sokol from the practice squad.

Trice, who was drafted by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, spent all of last season on the Reserve/Injured List.

For Trice, it’s his second trip to the reserve in as many years with the Steelers, only this one comes after making his team debut for the first time during the preseason. Not only was trice a feel-good story after bouncing back from last year’s season-ending knee injury, but he was also going to be (and already was) a significant contributor for Pittsburgh.

Not only one of the core special teamers, Trice was the third corner in the outside rotation, meaning he was one snap away from being a starter. And when that exact situation presented itself against the Denver Broncos, Trice responded accordingly:

For now, that role will go to CB James Pierre, who after departing in the offseason following a four-year stint in Pittsburgh, was re-signed to the practice squad last week, then elevated against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Luckily for Trice, a hamstring is certainly not the same severity as the knee injury he suffered last year, and he is eligible ro return from I.R. in four weeks.
