Adam Schefter names three AFC QBs for Dolphins to target to ‘save their season’

Even with a pair of star wide receivers in Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, plus electric second-year running back De’Von Achane on the field, the Miami Dolphins offense is in disarray without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on Monday’s episode of “The Pat McAfee Show” and discussed the Dolphins quarterback situation, among other topics.

Backup signal-caller Skylar Thompson took over for Tagovailoa when the latter suffered another concussion on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 2 vs. the Buffalo Bills and started Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks. However, Thompson exited Sunday’s contest in the third quarter with a rib injury and was replaced by journeyman Tim Boyle.

After two straight losses, Miami (1-2) is tied with the New England Patriots (1-2) for last place in the AFC East. Schefter said the team is in danger of losing its season and offered the names of three quarterbacks the team could target in a trade.

“You still have to address the quarterback position before the season slips away. In my mind, [the Dolphins] have to be making calls,” Schefter said. [I] didn’t hear anything back this morning, but there are three quarterbacks, in my mind, that make sense. Now, I’m not telling you that they have or will reach out to any of these quarterbacks, but I think I’d call Denver, and I’d say, ‘What would you want for Zach Wilson?’ I would call Pittsburgh, and I would say, ‘What would you want for Russell Wilson?’ And I would call Cleveland, and I would say, ‘What would you want for Dorian Thompson-Robinson?’ Because they have to save their season here and it doesn’t look they can.”

The insider added that Tyler “Snoop” Huntley could potentially “step in in relief here and stop the bleeding and get things back in order.” Schefter believes the Dolphins need to make a move to reach their potential.

Miami claimed Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad in mid-September.

“I like [Huntley], but to me, they have to look for another quarterback too, and those would be the guys that I would be looking at if it were me,” said Schefter.

Russell Wilson and Zach Wilson are in their first seasons with new teams: the Steelers and Broncos, respectively.

The former longtime Seattle Seahawks quarterback struggled in his two seasons with Denver from 2022-23 and hasn’t taken a snap with Pittsburgh this year as he battles a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, former first-round pick Justin Fields has helped lead the Steelers to a 3-0 start, and it doesn’t look like he’ll give up the lead gig anytime soon.

After being selected second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Zach Wilson had a mostly disastrous three-season stay with the New York Jets before being traded to the Mile High City in April. The 25-year-old hasn’t played yet this year and is third on head coach Sean Payton’s depth chart behind rookie starter Bo Nix and 28-year-old Jarrett Stidham.

Thompson-Robinson played in eight games (three starts) as a rookie with the Browns last year but is third on the team’s quarterback depth chart behind starter Deshaun Watson and backup Jameis Winston.
