49ers take another blow with Javon Hargrave season-ending injury

Brock Purdy is day-to-day with back soreness. Plus, more injury updates.

The San Francisco 49ers received the worst-case scenario for defensive tackle Javon Hargrave on Monday. Kyle Shanahan said Hargrave suffered a partially torn triceps and will miss the rest of the season.

This comes after Shanahan said that Hargrave had his best game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams. Hargrave’s injury requires surgery, which will sideline him for a few months. Shanahan said there’s a chance Hargrave could return, but it would be late in the playoffs.

The Niners are expecting Kalia Davis to return soon, per Shanahan. He’s scheduled to return from the Injured Reserve in the coming weeks. The 49ers will exhaust every option available to them to fill Hargrave’s role. Other options on the team include T.Y. McGill and Evan Anderson on the practice squad.

Hargrave led all defensive tackles in total pressures in Week 3, and Myles Garrett was the only player along the defensive line with a higher pressure rate than Javon. Needless to say, this is a gut-wrenching loss.

Hargrave ended up playing through his injury and re-entered the game in the fourth quarter after this play:

Linebacker Dee Winters re-aggravated his ankle injury. He’ll be day-to-day. Shanahan said Winters had earned playing time based on his play during training camp, and the plan was to rotate him in with De’Vondre Campbell dating back to this summer:

“Planned on it before the game. We planned on doing that early, just like we planned on doing it the week before with Gio and Malik. But he re-aggravated his ankle on the fake punt. We wanted to get the best guys out there.”

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is still a ways away: “No. I was hoping midseason. I haven’t asked here in a couple of weeks. Still hoping that, but midseason is still a ways away.”

Quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with back soreness and is day-to-day. Purdy took way too many hits yesterday:

Christian McCaffrey flew to Germany over the weekend to visit with a specialist. He’ll spend a few days there this week to get help for his ailing Achilles.

The 49ers are hoping to get tight end George Kittle back at practice this week, while cornerback Charvarius Ward is “good to go.”
