Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer has enjoyed his share of the spotlight at this year’s Laver Cup. The 20-time Grand Slam champion was seen interacting with current and former players in Berlin this weekend.
Before the conclusion of this year’s Laver Cup, Federer had a special gift for the outgoing captains, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. The 43-year-old presented the Swedish and American legends with iconic, customized Rolex watches.
Federer has been a brand ambassador for Rolex for a long time, and his partnership with the sponsor has continued after his retirement. The Swiss Maestro was also seen promoting Wilson as he tested his new RF 01 rackets at this year’s Laver Cup.
Borg and McEnroe will be stepping down as captains of Team Europe and Team World after seven years. They will be replaced by Yannick Noah and Andre Agassi, respectively.
Roger Federer has a requirement of playing his first match after retirement
Roger Federer’s agent has shared that the retired tennis legend has one condition before returning to the court for an exhibition match. The 20-time Grand Slam winner retired two years ago during the Laver Cup. Federer, along with his agent Tony Godsick, created the team event and is now attending this year’s Laver Cup in Berlin as a spectator.
Godsick spoke about the possibility of Federer playing an exhibition match, especially one against Rafael Nadal. However, the 43-year-old Swiss star will only return once he feels fully prepared. His right knee, which has been a persistent issue, still isn’t strong enough to play.
Federer’s knee problems began in 2021 when he played just five tournaments before exiting Wimbledon and undergoing a third surgery. Before the 2022 Laver Cup, he announced his retirement, ending his career due to this ongoing injury.
Federer has a history of playing in big exhibition events. Before his surgery in 2020, he and Nadal played in South Africa, breaking a record with 51,954 fans. He also played Alexander Zverev in Mexico in front of 42,517 people. Godsick believes Federer will look for another large venue if he returns to the court.
