Many people were surprised when the Carolina Panthers decided to bench second year quarterback Bryce Young. But Young has looked awful in his first two games. And it’s clear that head coach Dave Canales wanted to move on. Andy Dalton is now the starter in Carolina. Reporters on Friday asked Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott about Young being benched and he was empathetic with the situation.
Dak Prescott on Bryce Young getting benched
Here’s the transcribed version of the interview below.
“But understanding that you write your story. He’s writing his story. As a young player, when I say it’s the ultimate team game. We’re sometimes as good as the guys blocking for us and making catches as well. And to be frank, calling the plays. I haven’t watched any of their plays or games other than I guess the first one, breaking down the Saints really,” Prescott explained.
Like I said, it’s not a one-man problem. And so for him, it’s about understanding that control what you can control. Continue to prepare. Continue to study hard. And yeah, keep your head up. He’s a young player. I mean, I’ve seen tons of guys switch systems. Switch coaches, whatever it may be. And really start to shine. Yeah, it’s about really just knowing that he’s gotten to this point by playing a lot of great ball in his career. That didn’t go away overnight. So, stay true to him,” Prescott finished.
For whatever the reason, Bryce Young looks like a far cry from the quarterback prospect he looked during his days with the Alabama Crimson Tide and his high school days with the Mater Dei Monarchs. He’s scared to climb clean pockets, and missing open receivers. It’s been a tough watch. In two games, Young completed just 31 of his 56 pass attempts for 245 yards, while tossing in no touchdowns and three interceptions. He was sacked six times total in that time frame.
Perhaps the most concerning part of Bryce Young’s regression this season has been the Panthers’ offensive line has actually improved. After ranking 27th last year, Carolina had the 5th best pass blocking grade, according to Pro Football Focus.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of coaching staff/team situation Young can get into in the future. It’s clear that Dave Canales and his staff don’t have a lot of patience on waiting on him.
