Dolphins News: HC Mike McDaniel Provides Big Injury Update on Raheem Mostert

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said he’s “pessimistic” that running back Raheem Mostert will play Sunday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“I’d be pessimistic that he’d play, but I can’t rule it out,” McDaniel told reporters.

Mostert has been a limited participant in two practices this week because of a chest injury. He hasn’t been ruled out officially yet for the matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

With Tua Tagovailoa also sidelined with a concussion, it makes two offensive starters absent from Week 3.

De’Von Achane is the primary backup to the veteran running back. Achane will likely handle a majority of the backfield duties for Miami. The sophomore running back has proven he is can handle the responsibilities before.

Mostert didn’t play in the Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills. He also missed the game because of a chest injury. Achane was tasked with filling in for Mostert and tallied 96 yards on 22 carries.

Although Miami lost 31-10 to the Bills, the biggest storyline of the Thursday Night Football game was Tagovailoa sustaining his third concussion in the NFL.

Rumors have swirled about the starting quarterback’s future. The 26-year-old is at a crossroads in his career. He can either continue playing and risk further injury, or he can hang up his jersey.

Tagovailoa is meeting with neurologists this week to get a better understanding of what he should do regarding his future in the league.

Although the Dolphins quarterback will be sidelined for at least a few weeks, Mostert may still play in Week 3.

The veteran sustained the chest injury he’s been dealing with in the Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Mostert posted 19 total yards on eight touches against Jacksonville. Achane recorded 100 total yards on 17 touches in Week 1.

Although Mostert is technically the starting running back, McDaniel said he wouldn’t have just one go-to-guy in the backfield.

“Just trying to get individuals opportunities, and let those opportunities shape their overall breadth of how many touches they get in the course of a game,” McDaniel said ahead of the season. “I think it’s important to make sure that guys have the opportunity to get a couple carries. You feel, ‘This dude is having one of his days, we better lean on this guy.’ Just to get everybody involved is important for me, and then letting the game take its course on whose competitive edge we’re gonna lean on the most.”

Once the Dolphins release the final injury report, there will be a better picture regarding Mostert’s availability.
