The NFL season is kicking into high gear, which means it’s nearly time for teams to start pulling off blockbuster trades.

The San Francisco 49ers are no stranger to the blockbuster game, as they’ve acquired Christian McCaffrey and Chase Young before each of the last two trade deadlines. In 2024, they could be at it again, especially given the early wave of injuries impacting their season.

McCaffrey is on injured reserve, and the 49ers are left with Jordan Mason to shoulder the bulk of the ground game. Running back depth is important, and the 49ers could stand to add some with McCaffrey’s return timetable still uncertain.

Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins lost their quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, to a concussion against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2. Concussions have plagued Tagovailoa’s career, so the Dolphins have to at least be thinking about a backup plan for the rest of 2024.

That led 49ers reporter Matt Barrows of The Athletic to propose a blockbuster on Thursday, which involves a reunion with an old friend of Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers.

“The 49ers need a reliable running back, and the Miami Dolphins seem to need a quarterback,” Barrows said. “The Dolphins have an abundance of runners who are in the same offense as San Francisco’s, and the 49ers have two backup quarterbacks who are about equal in the eyes of Shanahan and who could quickly slide into Mike McDaniel’s attack.”

“Conclusion: Joshua Dobbs for Raheem Mostert… Who says no?”

It goes to show the value of the quarterback position in the NFL that a trade like this is even worth a discussion. Mostert led the NFL in both rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns in 2023, while Dobbs had a 3-9 record and was eventually benched for Nick Mullens.

However, Mostert has seemed replaceable in the Dolphins rushing attack through two weeks, with second-year back De’Von Achane assuming a much bigger role and Mostert missing Week 2 with a chest injury. Perhaps there’s a world where Miami gets desperate enough to pull the trigger.

Plus, if the Niners need one more selling point, there’s Dobbs’ nickname: “The Passtronaut.” How could any team not want a QB with such an incredible moniker?
