Last weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs took down the Cincinnati Bengals in a late-game thriller 26-25. Kansas City’s Harrison Butker hit a walk-off game-winning field goal from 51 yards out, moving the AFC West club to 2-0 in the early season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes did not play his best game, but a late-game defensive pass interference call on fourth-and-16 set up Butker’s game-winner, much to the dissatisfaction of NFL fans tired of the team’s impending dynasty.
Mahomes finished the afternoon 18-of-25 for 151 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Fortunately for Mahomes, another errant pass late in the third quarter, which led to an interception, got called back for defensive holding. Many prominent Twitter accounts pointed out that the overturned pick is the 17th for Mahomes since 2018, the most during that span. In the fallout, many fans jumped on Mahomes, the NFL, and the league’s officiating after the overturned interception stat went viral.
Fans React to Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Leading In Overturned INT Stat
According to multiple high-profile Twitter accounts, including WGR 550 Buffalo Bills Radio Network Pregame:
Patrick Mahomes threw his 17th INT, who was called back due to a defensive penalty. Most in the NFL since 2018.
On Sunday, Mahomes had another interception overturned in the third quarter when Cincinnati Bengals corner DJ Turner II’s pick was negated for illegal contact. It became Mahomes’ 17th interception called back because of a defensive penalty since 2018. Meanwhile, with nine, Cincinnati star passer Joe Burrow is second in that department. Nearly half of Mahomes’ overturned picks result from a defensive offsides penalty.
However, many of the interceptions thrown by Mahomes that did not count came from defensive holding, illegal contact, or roughing the passer. The most known example came in 2023, with Mahomes tossing a pick during a crucial fourth-quarter drive before New York Jets star corner Sauce Garner got called for a defensive holding away from the play. Many fans have grown to dislike the Kansas City Chiefs in recent years, with the Mahomes-led squad winning three Super Bowls in five years. Many of those same fans expressed their disdain for Kansas City and Mahomes following another negated turnover:
Seriously Thankyou for this. People need to know as if it’s not obvious already but for the blind this is good to know.

Then immediately threw another one ball don’t lie. Refs can’t save him every time.

Lmao mahomes is a turnover machine but the nfl refs hide his turnovers everytime

Pretty soon the refs are going to just start jumping up while the ball is sailing into the hands of the defense & just knocking the balls down in mid air.

Patrick Mahomes leads the NFL with 17 interceptions that were called back due to penalties since he became a starter in 2018. The League’s Golden Boy is a turnover machine that gets bailed out by the refs for ratings and storylines. pic.twitter.com/yRZxPMCwJx
