It was announced on Monday that former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt was set to visit the team. Now, Kansas City is signing the former backfield star to the practice squad.
Longtime NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed the news on X, stating:
“Reunion: The Chiefs are signing their own former star RB Kareem Hunt, who visited with and worked out for the team today, source says. Hell start on the PS and help fill the void left by Isiah Pacheco’s injury, which will put him out potentially two months.”
With Pacheco being sidelined for at least two months, Hunt can now work his way into the lineup, potentially becoming the starter for the foreseeable future.
Hunt was initially drafted by the Chiefs at No. 86 overall in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Toledo. During his rookie season in the NFL, Hunt secured 1,327 yards and eight rushing touchdowns, and another 455 yards and three touchdowns through the air. His 1,327 rushing yards led the league.
Hunt was named to the Pro Bowl in his first season, though the 2018 season was far less productive on the ground. Hunt would rush for 824 yards and seven touchdowns along with 378 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Towards the end of the 2018 season, a video emerged that showcased Hunt pushing down and kicking a woman. The Chiefs would release Hunt following the incident and release of the video.
The Cleveland Browns would eventually sign Hunt in Feb. 2019, though an investigation into the video led to his being suspended for the first eight games of the 2019 season. He would make his 2019 debut during Week 10.
Hunt has since remained with the Browns from 2019-23. His production has not yet returned to the same level that it was when his career began. However, he is a viable option for the Chiefs to add depth and a potential playmaker.
As it stands right now, the Chiefs might use rookie Carson Steele in the RB1 role while having Hunt serve in the backup role. Then again, if Hunt shows flashes, he could split carries with the rookie, as well.
The Chiefs currently have Steele and Semaje Perine as the healthy backs on the roster. Andy Reid might favor a running back committee that features all taking snaps in games, though that remains to be seen
