The 49ers have been reeling from the injury bug for most of the 2024 season, now adding Adrian Amos to give them insurance along the backline of the defense.

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of the veteran safety to the practice squad Tuesday. In order to make room, SF released wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. While it remains unclear if Amos could suit up for Week 7, he, at the very least, adds competition to a depleted secondary.

The player’s agency, Equity Sports, announced the signing first. The 49ers confirmed the deal thereafter.

Adrian Amos, 31, was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He has played for four teams in his nine-year career, most notably the Bears and the Green Bay Packers. The Penn State alum has played in 142 games, amassing 664 combined tackles, 49 pass break-ups and 10 interceptions. He has also played in eight postseason contests, adding an additional 29 tackles. He last played for the New York Jets and Houston Texans in 2023.

Amos joins a 49ers’ squad riddled with injuries.

Former All-Pro S Talanoa Hufanga is on injured reserve with a wrist injury, while rookie Malik Mustapha suffered a mild ankle sprain Week 6 in Seattle. Amos joins second-year standout Ji’Ayir Brown and George Odum as the three healthiest options at the position currently.

While his role remains undetermined for now, it’s possible he could push for key rotation minutes if he impresses in practice. Adrian Amos is quite familiar with the 49ers’ scheme, learning similarities under former SF assistants Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans last year.

Additionally, kicker Anders Carlson was signed to the 49ers’ practice squad Tuesday. He will serve as insurance for K Matthew Wright, the backup to K Jake Moody on the roster. Wright suffered a dislocated shoulder Week 6, and his status for Sunday is unclear at this time.
