‘Like drunks’: John Sterling disgusted with Yankees’ latest base-running gaffe

John Sterling is back in the booth for the postseason, and he did not hold back after a brutal display of base-running by the Yankees.

The Yankees seemed to be in great shape in the sixth inning after Jazz Chisholm doubled to start the frame, and Anthony Volpe walked to give the Bronx Bombers two men on base with no outs. Then, Chisholm made an elementary mistake as he was caught in a rundown on a pick-off attempt. He was tagged out, as the Yankees gifted the Cleveland Guardians a free out in a tight 3-2 Game 2 of the American League Championship Series.

All was not lost, as Anthony Rizzo later drove a ball down the first-base line to bring home Volpe. It was an insurance run that the Yankees needed.

Then, the inning abruptly ended when Rizzo was also caught in a rundown and tagged out during a pick-off attempt. It was a mistake that is seldom seen by a big-league club, much less twice in the same inning of a playoff game. Sterling had seen enough:

“If that wasn’t the Yankees,” Sterling said as the inning ended. “That’s what they do, run the bases like drunks.”

The Yankees would later win the game 6-3 to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

The legendary radio voice of the Yankees, who retired earlier this season before announcing a comeback just for the postseason run, is known for his colorful commentary and iconic home run calls. He added another hilarious moment to his career memory book on Tuesday.
