It’s indeed a milestone, but Cowboys fans are way too angry to want to celebrate right now.
If you haven’t noticed by now, the Dallas Cowboys’ fan base is a different breed.
Every year, they hype themselves up, believing that this is the year they don’t have to go back to reminiscing on how good the 1990s were with Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Micheal Irvin, and Deion Sanders. They think to themselves that this new season is where they win their first Lombardi trophy in nearly three decades.
Every season, they’re made fun of for their beliefs on internet memes on countless NFL-related social media pages. They take the hits and have to go back into hiding until OTAs, when they start to feel that old feeling again that this could be the Cowboys’ year.
They lay in bed on Saturday night before the season opener, hearing the voice of Jimmy Johnson yelling, “How Bout them Cowboys?” and then proceed to go on a roller coaster that ends in heartbreak once again.
Or maybe none of that’s true. Maybe Cowboys fans are like most of us. What if they’re realistic about their team and how this squad is good enough to get to the second round of the playoffs and then get bounced out as it has been for a few years?
There’s evidence of that on the Cowboys’ social media pages, specifically on X.
The Cowboys posted a graphic this evening congratulating their quarterback on 30,000 career passing yards. It’s a significant accomplishment ever since Dak Prescott got the start over Tony Romo back in 2016, a move that had many football fans in Dallas thinking that this could lead them back to the promised land.
You’d think the most loyal Cowboys followers would be congratulating Prescott, but they sound like any other football fan who yells at their television from one in the afternoon to eleven at night on a Sunday, four to six months out of the year.
Some of these comments are brutal, “I would’ve taken 29,999 and a win yesterday instead of 30,000 and a loss,” one user wrote that made it to the top of the thread.
Another saying, “The nerve. Fire this Account manager, lmao. READ THE FKN ROOM”
Even some of the short-answer ones that say “congratulations” read very blandly.
It’s clear that after a few seasons of feeling like America’s Team was back on track to a Super Bowl title, only to be let down in either the postseason or a “win and were in” kind of scenario on the final week of the regular season, has gotten to the fan base.
Cowboys fans sound like Eagles or Giants fans after an embarrassing loss. They sound fed up, and even if you’re not a fan of the kind of football played down in Dallas, you can’t help but feel like they have a right to be.
But like the Prescott said after the loss to the Ravens last night in regards to the teams bandwagon, “Jump off if you want, please.”
