Boston Celtics fans already held a grudge against Steve Kerr because his team, the Golden State Warriors, beat Boston in the Finals a few years ago.
But Kerr’s time coaching Team USA in the Paris Olympics gave fans more reason to dislike him.
Speaking to NBA.com, per NBC Sports, Kerr said Celtics fans will continue to take issue with his decision to bench Jayson Tatum often during the Olympics.
“I think they’re going to be all over me,” Kerr told NBA.com‘s Steve Aschburner, laughing. “That’s fine.”
Faithful Celtics followers expected to see a lot of Tatum in the summer games and they had every reason to believe he’d play frequently.
He was coming off his best season ever and had helped the Celtics win an NBA championship for the first time in years.
Tatum is one of the biggest names in the NBA and easily one of the most popular and successful American athletes, so why didn’t he play more?
Kerr explained his reasoning, saying he had a “math” problem that prevented much of Tatum.
The roster was so stacked that it was hard to let every player shine equally, he claimed.
That wasn’t good enough for many Celtics fans and they assumed Kerr sat Tatum out because he didn’t want to see a Boston player succeed.
There is no doubt that Kerr angered the Celtics fanbase and will probably hear about this choice for months to come.
But he’s used to criticism and is prepared for more of this backlash, especially whenever he sets foot in Boston.
