From John Elway in 1983 to Eli Manning in 2004, highly-rated quarterbacks rarely make a draft-day power play. Twenty-one years after Eli, Colorado\u2019s Shedeur Sanders could.<\/p>\n

Via C. Isaiah Smalls II of the\u00a0Miami Herald<\/i>, Colorado coach (and Shedeur\u2019s father) Deion Sanders\u00a0recently hinted<\/span>\u00a0at the possibility of steering Shedeur to the Miami Dolphins.<\/p>\n

It happened on an episode of the\u00a0Nightcap<\/i>\u00a0podcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you do business-wise if you\u2019re the Dolphins?\u201d Sanders said. \u201cDo you take a quarterback, which is what I\u2019m saying, or do you say, \u2018Tua, let\u2019s check this out, let\u2019s see what we\u2019re going to do.\u2019 Is his health more important than that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-host Chad Johnson eventually realized Deion was saying the Dolphins should draft Shedeur.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you just got the revelation, huh?\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n

At their current pace, the Dolphins might do poorly enough to earn their way to getting Shedeur. Things get interesting if some other team is in position to draft Sheduer and Deion makes it clear, publicly or privately, that he won\u2019t let Shedeur go to any team other than the Dolphins.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want what\u2019s best for him,\u201d Deion said of Shedeur. \u201cI want him to be happy as well. You really don\u2019t get to dictate where your son gets to go because there\u2019s a draft process, but you know us. You know how we are, we know who ain\u2019t trying to win in the NFL. You know who\u2019s consistently in the basement year after year after year. You don\u2019t want that situation for your kid or your family members. Nobody, none of them. So we know what time it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s time to look at something Deion said in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know where I want them to go<\/span>,\u201d Deion said on the\u00a0Million Dollaz Worth of Game<\/i>\u00a0podcast, regarding Shedeur and teammate Travis Hunter. \u201cSo, it\u2019s certain cities that ain\u2019t gonna happen. It\u2019s going to be an Eli.\u201d<\/p>\n

The possibility of Shedeur going to Miami presumes that Tua Tagovailoa will no longer be there. Unless he retires despite being cleared to play, that would be a very expensive proposition for Miami.<\/p>\n

The broader point is that, whether it\u2019s Miami or some other team, Deion can \u2014 and should \u2014 help Shedeur get his career started in the right place. Look at all of the quarterbacks who struggled with their initial teams and who are now flourishing. Incoming quarterbacks absolutely should be willing to avoid bad teams to start their careers. And to make their way to good ones.<\/p>\n
