Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is widely\u00a0expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season. He suffered the injury when Patrick Mahomes hit his knee while trying to make a tackle following a turnover. Where the Chiefs go from here is unknown.<\/p>\n
They are back-to-back champions and won last year despite having an unproven \u2013 and at one point, underperforming \u2013 wide receiver corps and have 2024 first-round pick Xavier Worthy now. However, former Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel offered several options that he would like to see KC trade for, some more likely than others.<\/p>\n
The one that probably blends best with talent and availability is\u00a0Cleveland Browns\u00a0wideout Amari Cooper.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe one that\u00a0makes the most sense to me\u00a0and I\u2019m most excited about, which I think could happen, is Amari Cooper from the Browns,\u201d Daniel told The Athletic\u2019s Dianna Russini on the \u201cScoop City\u201d podcast on October 1. \u201cI don\u2019t know what they\u2019re dealing with. But I know that \u2026 his contract is very tradable for.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cooper, a five-time Pro Bowler, is in the final year of a five-year, $100 million contract.<\/p>\n
He\u00a0restructured his deal with the Browns in July, and he will count for more than $22 million on Cleveland\u2019s books in 2025 if they do not extend him off his current pact.<\/p>\n
That would seem like an incentive for the Browns to refrain from trading Cooper and even look to extend him rather than lose him for nothing when he hit free agency in 2025. But Cooper was a speculative trade candidate during the offseason<\/p>\n
\u201cAmari Cooper was on the trade block. He was part of a package for Brandon Aiyuk. So we know that the Cleveland is open to to moving on from Amari Cooper. It\u2019s not something that they\u2019re hesitant about after a few drops, and, maybe, not the best effort on the field the last few weeks. I don\u2019t think Amari Cooper is playing at a super high level in Cleveland.\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel argued that playing with Mahomes would rejuvenate Cooper.<\/p>\n
He joked the wideout could be \u201ctrying to get traded\u201d amid poor play from Browns QB Deshaun Watson.<\/p>\n
Cooper has posted 1,000-plus-yard seasons in back-to-back years and seven of his nine pro seasons. Through four weeks in 2024, he is on track to set career-low marks in receptions and receiving yards.<\/p>\n
Daniel also expressed little faith in who the Chiefs have on hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, Kadarius Toney, Mecole Hardman are not No. 1 receivers,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cIn fact, they\u2019re like [No.] 3, 4, 5 wide receivers, right? In terms of, \u2018Hey, I don\u2019t know if you trust them, per se.\u2019 Now, Toney and Hardman made some plays down the stretch. [But] this year feels a little bit different to me. This year it, feels like Brett Beach, the GM of the Chiefs, needs to make a splash move<\/p>\n
\u201cLast year, Mahomes won in spite of his receivers. This year, there\u2019s all this fanfare. And Rashee Rice, you heard it through camp, \u2018He\u2019s the bonafide No. 1.\u2019 He showed it through the first four weeks of the year. Then you got Xavier Worthy. He\u2019s great but sort of a one-trick pony right now.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just think they need someone to replace Rice.<\/p>\n
Daniel\u2019s other suggestions ranged from flier-level options like\u00a0New York Giants\u00a0receiver Darius Slayton and Robert Woods of the\u00a0Houston Texans\u00a0to the highly unlikely, like his first suggestion.<\/p>\n
It was\u00a0Las Vegas Raiders\u00a0star Davante Adams. Daniel quickly came\u00a0back to reality.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a big swing, and I don\u2019t know how the salary cap\u2019s going to have it \u2013 but I think Davante Adams,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cI think Davante wants out, think Davante will get traded from the Raiders this year. I think he wants out. In division? Probably not.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adams is a popular trade candidate. His head coach \u2013 Antonio Pierce \u2013 stirred the pot, apparently\u00a0liking a post on Instagram\u00a0that suggested the Raiders could trade the six-time Pro Bowler.<\/p>\n
Adams has\u00a0denied knowledge of Pierce\u2019s motivations.<\/p>\n
The Las Vegas Review\u2019s Vincent Bonsignore reported on October 1 that the Raiders are\u00a0\u201cgrowing open\u201d to the idea of trading their star. Still, a trade within the AFC West seems virtually out of the question without an over-the-top offer.<\/p>\n
Daniel also suggested\u00a0Cincinnati Bengals\u00a0star Tee Higgins, to which Russini quickly said no and, when pressed about withholding information, joked her co-host was picking up her \u201ctells.\u201d<\/p>\n
Russini suggested and then undercut\u00a0Tennessee Titans\u00a0wideout DeAndre Hopkins as an option.<\/p>\n
Both hosts said the Chiefs need more than a jump-ball specialist, which Hopkins is at this point in his career. Russini ultimately concluded that, whatever path the Chiefs choose, Mahomes and Co. will figure it out and make it work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
