In 2023, RB\u00a0Christian McCaffrey\u00a0won an MVP award but that wasn\u2019t due to an inordinate amount of touches.<\/p>\n<p>Aiyuk, WR Deebo Samuel and TE\u00a0George Kittle\u00a0all totaled 1000+ yards from scrimmage last fall. As Aiyuk has worked his way back into the team after his successful contract holdout, San Francisco and Shanahan have done what they always do: spread the ball around.<\/p>\n<div id=\"AdThrive_Content_1_desktop\" class=\"adthrive-ad adthrive-content adthrive-content-1 adthrive-ad-cls\" data-google-query-id=\"\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/18190176,25816858\/AdThrive_Content_1\/5ad7479721520f50ab7da88e_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"google-ad-manager-fallback-container\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Coming into the Week 4 win over the\u00a0New England Patriots, QB Brock Purdy had been targeting his WRs at an almost even rate. After the 30-13 victory, that rate remained rigid as Samuel (5,) Aiyuk (5,) and fellow WR\u00a0Jauan Jennings\u00a0(6) all got their chances.<\/p>\n<p>The big difference with Aiyuk is that his connection with Purdy is still returning to normal. Jennings has caught 21 of his 27 targets and\u00a0Deebo\u00a0has brought down 16 catches on 24 passes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"AdThrive_Content_2_desktop\" class=\"adthrive-ad adthrive-content adthrive-content-2 adthrive-ad-cls\" data-google-query-id=\"\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/18190176,25816858\/AdThrive_Content_2\/5ad7479721520f50ab7da88e_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"google-ad-manager-fallback-container\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, Aiyuk is barely over 50% with 13 catches on 25 attempts. That is bound to change, and that is due to the receiver\u2019s consistent separation.<\/p>\n<h2>Advanced Metrics Show Aiyuk is Getting Open<\/h2>\n<p>In a recent piece from The Athletic writer\u00a0Matt Barrows, he highlights a significant metric from Fantasy Points data.\u00a0Aiyuk\u00a0isn\u2019t just getting open, he was the best in the NFL at making space after three games.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tweet-body\">\n<p>Top Separation Win Rates of the 2024 Season<br \/>\n+ per <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FantasyPtsData\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow external\">@FantasyPtsData<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1. CeeDee Lamb, Week 1 (42.9%)<\/p>\n<p>*lol, he\u2019s gonna be fine guys<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tweet-info\">\n<p>Sure enough, Aiyuk\u2019s first catch of the Week 4 win saw him catch the ball with acres of space.<\/p>\n<p>Aiyuk\u2019s only other catch saw him make a circus catch due to\u00a0Purdy missing the target. It\u2019s worth noting that Aiyuk had plenty of space on that reception as well.<\/p>\n<p>The contract holdout and mid-week hubbub about Aiyuk\u2019s shorts (more on that below) has created an air of contentiousness. In some ways, it\u2019s warranted. But in terms of Aiyuk regressing, his slow start to the year doesn\u2019t seem to be due to anything other than\u00a0the 49ers\u2019 mission to spread the ball around.<\/p>\n<h2>Aiyuk Wears Incorrect Uniform to 49ers Practice<\/h2>\n<p>Entering practice on September 27, Aiyuk arrived in red shorts while the rest of\u00a0San Francisco\u00a0all wore the typical uniform featuring black shorts. While it seems like an irrelevant detail, head coach Kyle Shanahan was filmed ripping into Aiyuk before making him change his shorts.<\/p>\n<p>Interpretations of the situation have been all over X and social media, with some stating that it represents why Aiyuk is not a team captain or a leader.
