In Kansas City\u2019s first divisional battle of the season, neither team will be playing at full strength.<\/p>\n
Coming into the NFL\u2019s Week 4, the (3-0)\u00a0Kansas City Chiefs\u00a0occupy first place in the AFC West. On Sunday, they\u2019ll play the second-place team \u2014 the (2-1)\u00a0Los Angeles Chargers\u00a0\u2014 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. Arrowhead Time.<\/p>\n
While it\u2019s Kansas City\u2019s first divisional game of the 2024 season, it may not feel as intense as it should. The Chargers\u2019 final injury report\u00a0featured four cornerstone players:<\/p>\n
\n
Left tackle Rashawn Slater:\u00a0Out<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n
Quarterback Justin Herbert:\u00a0Questionable<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0after being limited in this week\u2019s practices with an ankle injury<\/li>\n
Right tackle Joe Alt:\u00a0Questionable\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>after being held out of this week\u2019s practices with a knee injury<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
In addition, safety Derwin James was\u00a0suspended for this week\u2019s matchup\u00a0after an unnecessary roughness penalty in last week\u2019s game \u2014 the seventh of his career.<\/p>\n
The Chiefs won\u2019t be whole, either. Defensive end Mike Danna\u00a0injured his calf in practice this week\u00a0and won\u2019t play. It will be the team\u2019s second game without starting running back Isiah Pacheco \u2014 and wide receiver Hollywood Brown has missed all of this season\u2019s games.<\/p>\n
There is no injury report, however, that will stop new Los Angeles head coach Jim Harbaugh from striving for an upset in his first shot at the Chiefs.<\/p>\n
Here are five things to watch during the game:<\/p>\n
1. Creating more explosive plays<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/picture><\/span><\/span>Photo by Ronald Martinez\/Getty Images<\/cite><\/span><\/figure>\n
The Chiefs\u2019 offense has mostly succeeded at sustaining drives and staying ahead of the sticks this season. The unit has the\u00a0league\u2019s highest rushing success rate (56.5%)\u00a0and has\u00a0faced the fourth-fewest third downs.<\/p>\n
But the offense has been clunky when finishing drives \u2014 whether that\u2019s been from giving the ball away (the Chiefs\u00a0have the fourth-highest rate of drives ending in turnovers) or stalling in the red zone: the team\u00a0ranks 22nd in red-zone touchdowns.<\/p>\n
The remedy is more explosive plays \u2014 on the ground and through the air. The backfield has only produced two rushes of 10 or more yards this season (both by Pacheco). Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is\u00a0tied for the NFL\u2019s lowest average depth of target (5.2 yards).<\/p>\n
It\u2019s on the scheme to help produce more big plays against a vulnerable defense \u2014 especially compared to the experienced, instinctive back ends Kansas City faced in the last two weeks.<\/p>\n
2. Getting the Chargers to third-and-long<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/picture><\/span><\/span>Photo by Ronald Martinez\/Getty Images<\/cite><\/span><\/figure>\n
If it feels like the Chiefs\u2019 pass rush has been quiet this season, it\u2019s because it has had limited opportunities to pin their ears back and go after sacks. The defense has\u00a0faced the seventh-fewest third-down pass plays\u00a0this season. Four of the unit\u2019s six sacks have come on third down.<\/p>\n
That will start on first down and second down, when Los Angeles will be testing Kansas City\u2019s run defense: the Chargers have\u00a0the fourth-highest run rate (55.5%). Especially with potential injury absences, running back J.K. Dobbins will be heavily featured; he\u00a0has the league\u2019s third-most rushing yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carry.<\/p>\n
The Chiefs have had success slowing down the opponent\u2019s primary ball carrier; they should feel comfortable committing to doing so in this game, too. If Kansas City can create more obvious passing downs, the team will have more chances to attack the Chargers\u2019 wounded pass protection.<\/p>\n
3. A dominant Kansas City pass defense<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/picture><\/span><\/span>Photo by Kevin C. Cox\/Getty Images<\/cite><\/span><\/figure>\n
The first step will be forcing more passing downs. But then the Chiefs need to smother the Chargers in those situations, in which Kansas City should always have a strong advantage.<\/p>\n
The injuries at offensive tackle will give pass rushers Chris Jones and George Karlaftis a chance to tee off from the edge, while Danna\u2019s injury should allow second-year defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah to get an extended opportunity. Last Sunday, he earned the first full sack of his career \u2014 and forced a fumble in the process.<\/p>\n
The pressure may be even more impactful if backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke plays \u2014 especially for the secondary. Heinicke has\u00a0thrown 28 interceptions in 29 career starts. Chiefs\u2019 cornerback Trent McDuffie is still looking for his first career pick.<\/p>\n
4. Travis Kelce\u2019s breakout game<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/picture><\/span><\/span>Photo by Ronald Martinez\/Getty Images<\/cite><\/span><\/figure>\n
The Chiefs\u2019 first three opponents deserve credit for formulating (and executing) sound plans to take tight end Travis Kelce out of the mix. But it doesn\u2019t feel like the Chargers will have the coverage talent to continue that trend.<\/p>\n
The injured unit will want to make Kansas City earn every downfield yard. That means its depleted safeties will be focused on keeping wide receiver Xavier Worthy from beating them deep \u2014 and containing wide receiver Rashee Rice after the catch.<\/p>\n
So this feels like the game where Kelce takes advantage of James\u2019 absence and returns to being Mahomes\u2019 safety valve over the middle. The Los Angeles defense has\u00a0allowed the fourth-most receptions to tight ends\u00a0this season.<\/p>\n
5. The return of Kareem Hunt<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/picture><\/span><\/span>Photo by Sean M. Haffey\/Getty Images<\/cite><\/span><\/figure>\n
Nearly six years since he last played for the Chiefs, it appears that Hunt will begin his journey to redemption on Sunday; he was\u00a0signed to the 53-man roster this week.<\/p>\n
He will be joined by running backs Samaje Perine and rookie Carson Steele in the backfield, giving the Chiefs a powerful trio of rushers.\u00a087 of Steele\u2019s 99 rushing yards this season have come after contact. Perine\u00a0forced three missed tackles over nine touches in Week 3.<\/p>\n
Last season, Hunt was used as a red-zone back for the\u00a0Cleveland Browns. He scored a career-high nine touchdowns \u2014\u00a0all of them coming from inside the 20-yard line;\u00a0six came in goal-to-go situations.<\/p>\n
He also caught a touchdown pass in Cleveland\u2019s playoff game. That\u2019s an underrated part of what Hunt can bring to the table. It\u2019ll be intriguing to watch him with the ball in his hands, whether it\u2019s on a handoff or a dump-off to the flat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
