Jackson explained as much, per\u00a0Ravens.com Editorial Director Ryan Mink: \u201cAt the end of the day, I\u2019m a grown man too, just like those guys. I feel pretty good. I came out of the game pretty good. We\u2019re going to keep it going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The irony is the Ravens don\u2019t need Jackson to run as often as he did during Week 1\u2019s 27-20 defeat in Kansas City. Not with two-time league rushing champion\u00a0Derrick Henry\u00a0in the backfield.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Jackson isn\u2019t about to stop trusting his legs: \u201cWe\u2019ve got Derrick Henry,\u00a0Justice Hill, those guys. But I\u2019m going to do whatever it takes to win. That type of game, sometimes you\u2019ve got to do what you\u2019ve got to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mobility is a core part of Jackson\u2019s game, but the benefits come with costs. First, the more he runs, the more Jackson is subject to criticism that he\u2019s somehow not a proper quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>Such criticism is misguided, but the bigger cost concerns Jackson\u2019s ability to avoid injury diminishing the more hits he takes.<\/p>\n<h2>Lamar Jackson\u2019s Right to Defend Playing Style<\/h2>\n<p>Staying on the move is one more way for Jackson to gash defenses. His rushing skills don\u2019t just keep the chains moving, they provide the big plays often lacking from a pedestrian passing game.<\/p>\n<p>A good example occurred against the Chiefs, when Jackson clocked 18.45 mph on this scramble, per\u00a0Next Gen Stats\u00a0(h\/t Mink).<\/p>\n<p>Jackson\u2019s speed on the deck means the Ravens can stretch the field at any moment. It also means he often sees less numbers in coverage as opponents stack the box to stop a running signal-caller.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reduced coverage helps Jackson pick his spots as a passer. Even though his rushing antics have often had him labelled as a running back, a familiar refrain former NFL linebacker\u00a0Emmanuel Acho rebuffed\u00a0after Week 1.<\/p>\n<p>Acho told\u00a0OutKick\u2019s Bobby Burack\u00a0Jackson is \u201ca quarterback that\u2019s better than most quarterbacks, and a runner that\u2019s better than most running backs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ravens\u00a0hate the criticism Jackson still has to answer, but they don\u2019t need him to change.<\/p>\n<p>Ravens Don\u2019t Need Lamar Jackson to Change<\/p>\n<p>Jackson needs to stay the same because his style of play makes key areas of the team better. This year that means a rebuilding offensive line doesn\u2019t need to hold up in pass protection for as long.<\/p>\n<p>Not when No. 8 is able to amass yards in chunks on scrambles. It\u2019s what Jackson did 12 times against the Chiefs, \u201chis 3rd-highest rate in the last four seasons,\u201d according to\u00a0Next Gen Stats.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson running is one extra thing to worry about, forcing defenses to think then react, rather than play quicker on instinct. This creates bigger holes for running backs to exploit and more one-on-one matchups for receivers.<\/p>\n<p>The caveat is the more Jackson runs, the more he\u2019s at risk of suffering injury. Being without the face of the franchise usually costs the Ravens, like when Jackson was sidelined\u00a0four games with an ankle injury\u00a0in 2021 and Baltimore missed the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>A knee problem kept Jackson out of six games a season later.
