Following the postgame blame game after the\u00a0Dallas Cowboys\u2018 loss in Week 3 to the\u00a0Baltimore Ravens, some names are being mentioned as possible replacement options for head coach Mike McCarthy. While former\u00a0New England Patriots\u00a0head coach Bill Belichick is a popular suggestion to fill McCarthy\u2019s shoes, a few other names are also being mentioned.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome candidates feel very obvious, while others are a bit under-the-radar,\u201d NFL writer and expert\u00a0John Buhler of FanSided said\u00a0in a September 23 feature naming five McCarthy replacement recommendations.<\/p>\n
McCarthy is in the\u00a0final year of his contract, and with the Cowboys 1-2 heading into Week 4, some are ready for a change.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt seems more and more likely that with each passing week that Mike McCarthy is not the long-term answer for the Dallas Cowboys at head coach,\u201d\u00a0Buhler wrote, adding that \u201cit goes without saying that hiring him was a huge mistake. Yes, he can get his team ready to play during the regular season, but there was always a finite ceiling, especially during the NFC playoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Buhler\u2019s No. 1 favorite is an under-the-radar candidate in former\u00a0Tennessee Titans\u00a0head coach Mike Vrabel.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook. I don\u2019t care if he is labeled as a retread head coach,\u201d Buhler said. \u201cDon\u2019t be stupid. Just hire Mike Vrabel, and thank me later.\u201d<\/p>\n
Buhler says \u201cVrabel could be a top candidate for any number of marquee jobs, both in the NFL and in college\u201d and names\u00a0Ohio State another possibility for him, if Ryan Day falls short of expectations.<\/p>\n
When it comes to the Cowboys,\u00a0Buhler says, \u201cVrabel may be defensive-minded, but he knows how to build a great staff. More importantly, he would command a strong running game in Dallas, one that would get the absolute most out of (Dallas Cowboys quarterback)\u00a0Dak Prescott\u00a0benefiting from it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cVrabel is the first head coach I would call.\u201d<\/p>\n
Belichick is often mentioned in McCarthy replacement chatter.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can argue whether or not Belichick, who will be 73 before the next season kicks off, is the right coach. What\u2019s hard to argue is that his leverage with Dallas has never been greater,\u201d Sports Illustrated\u2019s\u00a0Randy Gurzi wrote in a September 22 feature about Belickick possibly \u201ccounting dollar signs\u201d after the Cowboys\u2019 loss to the Ravens.<\/p>\n
Buhler names Belichick as a replacement possibility but has him at No. 4 on the tally.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile Belichick would, in theory, be the type of head coach that (Dallas Cowboys owner) Jerry Jones would concede power to out of respect, is that really what the Cowboys want to do?\u201d\u00a0Buhler asked. \u201cEven amid all of their high-profile, on-field struggles in big moments, Dallas has been able to draft well and develop its players. The Cowboys may pay a premium to retain their own guys in free agency, but team-building has not been an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
With that in mind, Buhler gives Belickick a \u201chard pass\u201d but says that \u201cjust because I do not love the fit does not mean the Cowboys will not consider hiring Belichick.\u201d<\/p>\n
Buhler\u00a0also suggests looking at\u00a0USC Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley,\u00a0Detroit Lions\u00a0offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and\u00a0Houston Texans\u00a0offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik as McCarthy replacement options.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
