The\u00a0Kansas City Chiefs<\/strong>\u00a0are 3-0 after claiming yet another hard-fought win in the 2024\u00a0NFL<\/strong>\u00a0season, this time against the\u00a0Atlanta Falcons<\/strong>. The record is great, but\u00a0Andy Reid<\/strong>\u00a0knows Patrick Mahomes and company still need to improve<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The truth is the defense saved the night on Sunday after the offense allowed the Falcons to have possession late in the fourth quarter. Nick Bolton managed to stop Bijan Robinson on a fourth-down situation to let the\u00a0Chiefs<\/strong>\u00a0hold on to their lead, but Reid\u00a0doesn\u2019t want to be in that situation again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a ton of things to work on,\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Reid said in his postgame press conference,\u00a0with a clear warning<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0Mahomes<\/strong>\u00a0and the Chiefs\u2019 offense.\u00a0\u201c<\/em>We need to do a better job offensively on that last drive and not put the defense in that position<\/em><\/strong>. But we stepped up on the defensive side and did a nice job of holding them out of there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Reid and Mahomes know each other too well to know these comments\u00a0will not create any friction<\/strong>\u00a0between them. The Chiefs quarterback, in fact, is always\u00a0the first to be self-critical<\/strong>\u00a0when things don\u2019t go to plan. That\u2019s why his blunt admission after the\u00a0Falcons<\/strong>\u00a0game\u00a0was not surprising at all<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mahomes lets Reid know he knows he must improve for the Chiefs<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t played well, in really, all three games<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d Mahomes said.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve been able to win, and that speaks to the character of the team, the grit, and how we\u2019ve been in these situations before.\u00a0<\/em>But I\u2019ll speak especially offensively for me, I feel like I haven\u2019t played very well<\/em><\/strong>. That\u2019s not a stats thing.\u00a0<\/em>I just feel like I\u2019m missing opportunities whenever they\u2019re out there and not throwing the ball in the exact spot I want it to be at<\/em><\/strong>. So, that\u2019s about me getting back to my fundamentals, putting our guys in the right position, and then we got to execute at a higher level offensively. If teams are going to make us drive the field we have to prove that we\u2019re able to do that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Mahomes completed 26 of his 39 passes against the Falcons, throwing for 217 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. These numbers were enough for the Chiefs to emerge victorious, but they\u00a0don\u2019t meet the high standard set by the two-time\u00a0<\/strong>NFL<\/strong>\u00a0MVP.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Texas Tech product doesn\u2019t need anyone else to tell him what\u2019s wrong, he\u2019s the first to admit there\u2019s work to be done. And Mahomes\u00a0knows exactly which are the areas where he needs to improve.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI think just footwork stuff,<\/em><\/strong>\u201d Mahomes said.\u00a0\u201c<\/em>I\u2019ve got to get my base right. I think I\u2019m trusting my arm too much on some of those throws<\/em><\/strong>. Even the first throw of the game, I just kind of flicked it \u2013 kind of off-balance \u2013 and don\u2019t hit Rashee (Rice) going down the seam there. I\u2019ve got to get back to my fundamentals.\u00a0<\/em>That\u2019s stuff that I go through sometimes [but] not usually early in the season like this.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Luckily for me, I\u2019m not playing my best football and we\u2019re still getting wins.
