Dallas is mixing the new and the old in their approach to the RB group and adding\u00a0Dameon Pierce\u00a0to that mix would add a new dimension.<\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys are relying on\u00a0Rico Dowdle\u00a0and\u00a0Ezekiel Elliott\u00a0to lead the rushing attack. The duo totaled 66 rushing yards and 3.6 yards per carry against a talented\u00a0Cleveland Browns\u00a0defense. That\u2019s about as middling a performance as you can get.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Inside the Star writer\u00a0Cody Warren wrote\u00a0that the Cowboys should pursue Pierce. While Dallas does have\u00a0Dalvin Cook\u00a0preparing\u00a0to make his debut, Warren thinks it won\u2019t hurt to add another talented RB.<\/p>\n<p>The former Florida Gator had a fantastic rookie season in 2022 but has fallen out of favor and is now behind\u00a0Joe Mixon\u00a0in Houston. Pierce, 24, likely being available for cheap while also playing on a rookie deal is a big kicker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0Cowboys front office could make the trade without losing much draft capital. The low-cost contract fits what the front office looks for in players. A young player with the ability to elevate the offense and force defenses to adjust their game plan would be fantastic. Giving our current running backs a chance to prove themselves is a novel idea, but an upgrade to the position will make everyone better,\u201d Warren wrote on September 13.<\/p>\n<h2>Pierce Starts Strong, Fades Fast in Houston<\/h2>\n<p>Pierce was clearly a talented prospect coming out of Florida, but Texans fans couldn\u2019t have asked for a better rookie season than the RB\u2019s 2022 campaign.\u00a0Pierce ran\u00a0for 939 yards and scored 5 total touchdowns during the season.<\/p>\n<p>However, his usage shifted dramatically in 2023. Injury affected his playing time for starters, but\u00a0Devin Singletary\u2019s rise in the Houston offense also made a key difference. Pierce totaled 416 rushing yards on 145 carries, scoring twice.<\/p>\n<p>Texans QB\u00a0C.J. Stroud\u00a0has elevated the offense to a new level, but it doesn\u2019t seem like Pierce is a major part of their plans. In Houston\u2019s Week 1 win over the\u00a0Indianapolis Colts, Pierce received just three handoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Dalvin Cook on the Way for Cowboys<\/p>\n<p>The biggest critique of Warren\u2019s suggestion has to be that the Cowboys haven\u2019t seen what Cook can do yet. While Cowboys head coach\u00a0Mike McCarthy\u00a0hasn\u2019t provided a specific date for the four-time Pro Bowler but said Week 2 and the following week are important to getting him ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad he\u2019s here,\u201d McCarthy said according to\u00a0Lonestarlive.com. \u201cImpressive. Phenomenal feet. I\u2019ve had a chance to watch him a lot. He looks really good. He really fits into the room very well. \u2026 If you look at his time frame and how much time he\u2019s been here, I think the biggest thing is hopefully we can get a full week\u2019s work this week and next week. That\u2019s only going to help the guys that got here late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cook is coming off a disappointing ventures with the\u00a0New York Jets\u00a0and\u00a0Baltimore Ravens in 2023.
