That\u2019s the simple summary leaving Sunday\u2019s 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>Though three weeks of data is not a large sample, trends are emerging. Below are the 49ers\u2019 advanced efficiency ranks among the NFL\u2019s 32 teams. Offense and defense are ranked by expected points added (EPA) per play, while special teams is ranked by defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA) \u2014\u00a0a related measure \u2014 since public EPA figures are not yet updated for that phase of the game.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p><strong>Offense:\u00a0<\/strong>No. 5<br \/>\n<strong>Defense:<\/strong>\u00a0No. 25<br \/>\n<strong>Special teams:\u00a0<\/strong>No. 26<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>One of these things is not like the others. The offense is delivering efficient yet imperfect football, while the 49ers are languishing in the other two phases. The special teams figure doesn\u2019t even include L.A.\u2019s successful fake punt, since that\u2019s not considered a predictive play; the 49ers would rank No. 31 or 32 if that were part of the equation. (For comparison, last season\u2019s 49ers finished at No. 1 on offense, No. 10 on defense, and No. 26 on special teams.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>Clearly, the 49ers must pick up more slack to better support quarterback Brock Purdy and Co.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the NFL,\u201d 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa said after Sunday\u2019s loss. \u201cNo matter how talented you are, you have to play good on Sunday. We\u2019ve been practicing great. It\u2019s not that. We have to understand what teams are trying to do to us and adjust to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>Is that an indictment of new 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen, whose unit lost effectiveness against coach Sean McVay\u2019s Rams offense as Sunday\u2019s game progressed? Perhaps. The bottom line is that the 49ers lost a game they should\u2019ve won against an opponent that looked overmatched for a significant stretch. There\u2019ll undoubtedly be questions about a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BaldyNFL\/status\/1838263100879122821\">late play<\/a>\u00a0in which Purdy didn\u2019t throw to a wide-open Brandon Aiyuk. Maybe Purdy didn\u2019t see his wideout. Purdy has delivered through a wide array of circumstances with both his arm and his legs. As long as Purdy continues playing at this level, the 49ers will stay in the mix.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"floats\">\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p><strong>Running back\/fullback:<\/strong>\u00a0Jordan Mason (53), Isaac Guerendo (10), Kyle Juszczyk (44)<br \/>\n<strong>Game grade: B<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>Mason still leads the NFL in rushing attempts after another rough-and-tumble day, this one featuring 19 carries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>The 49ers gave Guerendo his biggest workload yet. In the locker room, the rookie said he could improve his patience on outside-zone runs, but he was much more comfortable than in Week 2. The 49ers even lined Guerendo up at wide receiver, his position in high school, on one play.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>On the note of positional versatility, consider Juszczyk\u2019s wide array of alignments:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>Fullback: 17 snaps<br \/>\nTight end: 18 snaps<br \/>\nSlot: 7 snaps<br \/>\nWideout: 2 snaps<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>He\u2019s technically a fullback, but the 49ers employ Juszczyk \u2014 who was a slot receiver back at Harvard \u2014 in many spots beyond that. The 49ers clearly worked to get the ball to Aiyuk, who drew heavy coverage on Purdy\u2019s initial touchdown to Jennings. That gave the Rams their first glimmer of hope. Bell then dropped two passes, including a deep ball that could\u2019ve turned into a game winner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>The 49ers certainly missed stars Deebo Samuel Sr., Christian McCaffrey, and George Kittle on those plays. Their absences pushed Bell into the target rotation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"floats\">\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p><strong>Tight end: <\/strong>Eric Saubert (61), Jake Tonges (16), Brayden Willis (4)<br \/>\n<strong>Game grade: A-<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>Saubert now has four catches for 67 yards through three games. That might not seem like much, but he has already outpaced his predecessor\u2019s output from all of last season. Charlie Woerner, who\u2019s now with the Atlanta Falcons, had just three catches for 32 yards last season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>The 49ers have long been looking to augment Kittle\u2019s receiving production. Perhaps Saubert can diversify their attack once Kittle is back in the lineup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"floats\">\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p><strong>Offensive line:<\/strong>\u00a0Colton McKivitz (71), Dominick Puni (71), Jake Brendel (71), Aaron Banks (71), Trent Williams (69), Jaylon Moore (2)<br \/>\n<strong>Game grade: D<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"article-body undefined text-left\">\n<p>The 49ers are getting decent pass protection from both guards, Banks and Puni. But McKivitz and even Williams \u2014 who exited again due to cramps as he continues to play his way back into shape \u2014\u00a0have struggled.
