One point of criticism with the\u00a0Dallas Cowboys\u00a0this season is the team\u2019s running back roster. During the offseason, the Cowboys let\u00a0Tony Pollard\u00a0walk, and he went into free agency,\u00a0landing with the Tennessee Titans. The team brought veteran running back\u00a0Ezekiel Elliott\u00a0back on a one-year deal, but as much as Elliot is a beloved player, he\u2019s not really a franchise running back. They also added\u00a0Dalvin Cook\u00a0late in the offseason, but he remains on the\u00a0practice squad.<\/p>\n
In light of the Cowboys\u2019 running back situation, it\u2019s not surprising that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been asked about the team\u2019s plans for the position. When asked about it in a September 20 interview on\u00a0105.3 The Fan, Jones pushed back and threw some shade at the media for what he said was amplifying the running back situation.<\/p>\n
Speaking with the\u00a0K&C Masterpiece show, Jones said\u00a0getting all these running back questions was new territory for him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a little bit of a first for me, because I\u2019ve never seen such made of our position and what we\u2019re doing at that position, running back, this year and not having done this or not having done that at running back,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n
He also shot down the idea of the team actively looking to change their running back situation, stating, \u201cRunning back is just not on our radar as far as an area of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jones also threw some shade at the media for asking such questions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t have anybody else in the world asking me about this but some media,\u201d he said. \u201cA few of the media have gotten out here and written some stories early about how we\u2019re going to go with a running back in the draft or how we need a running back, and they\u2019re trying to cover their you-know-what as we go through the season.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the same interview, when asked about the idea of activating Cook from the practice squad,\u00a0Jones said, \u201cI don\u2019t know that that will happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
This echoes\u00a0comments the 81-year-old made in a separate interview\u00a0with 105.3 The Fan on September 17.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were pleased\u2026We could\u2019ve had some better protection with our running backs\u2026 I don\u2019t see a change that could involve [Dalvin] Cook this week,\u201d\u00a0Jones said.<\/p>\n
In a September 20 feature, Todd Brock of USA Today\u2019s Cowboys Wire is\u00a0critical of Jones\u00a0for his lack of action on the team\u2019s running back position.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe emperor in Dallas has no clothes. And the Cowboys have no running game,\u201d\u00a0the NFL analyst and expert wrote. \u201cAnd the man in charge can\u2019t- or won\u2019t- admit it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mauricio Rodriguez of A to Z Sports agrees and\u00a0says he doesn\u2019t believe Jones\u2019 comments\u00a0will \u201cage well.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo far, we\u2019ve seen little evidence to believe the Cowboys\u2019 running game will turn around things,\u201d\u00a0he wrote in a September 20 piece. \u201cAccording to Jones, it\u2019s the media making up stuff. My bet? The rest of the season is unlikely to allow his words to age well and at the end of the day, fans are watching the ballgames. It\u2019s not a \u2018who said what\u2019 game.
