That\u2019s great for the team but a little bit of a problem for starting quarterback\u00a0Russell Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson didn\u2019t have firm control of the job before his calf injury, having to win the starting quarterback role in the preseason. So, the longer Fields continues to shine in the regular season, the harder it will be to keep Wilson the team\u2019s starter in name.<\/p>\n<p>Many pundits,\u00a0including retired quarterback Ben Roethlisberger,\u00a0have already argued that Fields has done enough through two games to remain the team\u2019s starter when Wilson is healthy.<\/p>\n<p>But on September 18, Pro Football Talk\u2019s Mike Florio presented the potential repercussions of permanently benching Wilson for Fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge is keeping Russell Wilson from activating his personal media machine in the event that he knows he\u2019s ready to go, and he\u2019s frustrated about not playing,\u201d\u00a0Florio said\u00a0during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan. \u201cThat\u2019s the only downside to this, but I think they know how to handle him in a way that will keep him from trying to make his case through his PR representatives, to reporters who would be pushing the agenda that, \u2018Why did he come here? He should be traded,\u2019 whatever the case may be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson practiced in a limited fashion on September 18.<\/p>\n<p>Head coach Mike Tomlin said\u00a0a day earlier that the team was preparing Fields to start against the\u00a0Los Angeles Chargers\u00a0on September 22.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-youtube-com\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Play\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M1hCqjhLZso?autoplay=1\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Steelers Trending Toward Starting Justin Fields Over Healthy Russell Wilson?<\/h2>\n<p>There are a couple of different ways to react to Florio\u2019s points about Wilson\u2019s \u201cpersonal media machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First, that a journalist would admit that he or one of his colleagues would cater to pushing a narrative for a player is interesting.<\/p>\n<p>But that aside, it seems Florio could be greatly overstating the power of Wilson\u2019s PR team. Despite\u00a0Tomlin repeatedly stating\u00a0all summer that Wilson was \u201cin the pole position\u201d to start, and\u00a0Steelers insiders predicting\u00a0Wilson would be the starter, the national media \u201cpushed\u201d Fields narratives that\u00a0argued the 25-year-old should start\u00a0instead of the Super Bowl champion.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Wilson didn\u2019t have his PR working because he knew he was going to be the starter? It\u2019s difficult to say.<\/p>\n<p>Florio appears to be right, though, because Tomlin has treaded lightly when talking about his quarterbacks.\u00a0Tomlin has firmly avoided\u00a0any guesses about who would be starting when Wilson became healthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy position regarding the pecking order and the depth chart has not changed, guys,\u201d\u00a0Tomlin told reporters on September 17. \u201cAnd it won\u2019t until the other guy gets healthy, and then we\u2019ll give it real consideration. Until then, I won\u2019t speculate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those answers are helping Tomlin delay the next major decision he\u2019ll have to make behind center. It\u2019s only a disservice to the Steelers for Tomlin to name Fields his starter when Wilson can\u2019t play. Fields could revert back to his turnover-prone ways, so the Steelers may still need Wilson when he\u2019s healthy.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Steelers Give Wilson \u2018Petty Game Ball\u2019 After Broncos Victory<\/h2>\n<p>The other factor working against Wilson is the Steelers have very little invested in him. The team landed him for the veteran league minimum because the\u00a0Denver Broncos\u00a0are\u00a0paying him $39 million\u00a0not to play for them this season.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson also turns 36 in November. Yes, the Steelers want to win this season, but if the team develops Fields this fall, they could be set at quarterback for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>So, though it\u2019s a possibility that Wilson doesn\u2019t reclaim his starting job, Tomlin is thinking of other ways to keep the quarterback happy, Florio said. One example is the \u201cpetty game ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s why they\u2019re doing things like giving him the \u2018petty game ball,\u201d\u00a0said Florio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll find another way to make you happy. They\u2019ll find ways to make Russell Wilson want to stay. But he needs to play this year to set himself up to be a starter somewhere next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomlin would not address the \u201cpetty game ball\u201d he gave Wilson and other former Broncos after the team beat Denver.
