I\u2019d be disrespectful to Wednesday, Thursday and Friday if I had a hardcore plan in mind about how I was going to roll those guys,\u201d Tomlin said on Tuesday ahead of Week 3. \u201cI\u2019m going to give Broderick an opportunity to rebound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a talented young player,\u201d the Steelers HC went on. \u201cI\u2019m sure he suffered some disappointment in terms of [2024 first rounder]\u00a0Troy [Fautanu] starting \u2014 it\u2019s a natural thing. But he\u2019s got to move past it, and I\u2019ve got to give him the opportunity to move past it as a leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomlin noted that the Steelers will let the \u201cquality of participation\u201d be their guide as they decide how they will deploy Fautanu and Jones against the\u00a0Los Angeles Chargers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a new week,\u201d he concluded, leaving the door open for Jones to step up and win back some sort of role.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Steelers Rookie Troy Fautanu Took Over as Starting Right Tackle vs. Broncos<\/h2>\n<p>Facing the\u00a0Denver Broncos\u00a0in Week 2, Tomlin started out with Fautanu at right tackle. But as he explained on September 17, the plan was always to use both first-round talents throughout the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had intentions of utilizing both guys,\u201d Tomlin admitted this week. \u201cI acknowledge that [Fautanu] was healthy, I acknowledge that [Fautanu] was capable. That\u2019s why we started him. But I rolled him because I had concerns about his level of conditioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a young guy, he\u2019s new to me, he\u2019s new to the NFL,\u201d the veteran coach continued. \u201cI didn\u2019t know how fatigue would affect his play in terms of detail, and so we tried to ward off some of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomlin voiced that he had \u201cevery intention\u201d of spelling Fautanu with Jones throughout the game, but added that the latter\u2019s propensity for penalties forced him to go back to the rookie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Broderick started getting highly penalized in play, I backed off of him, I held my breath, and I played Troy,\u201d Tomlin said.<\/p>\n<p>According\u00a0to Pro Football Focus, Fautanu was on the field for 55 out of the 66 offensive snaps in Week 2. In his 11 snaps, Jones was flagged three times while Fautanu wasn\u2019t flagged at all.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Steelers Rookie Troy Fautanu Grades Out Well as Pass Protector in NFL Debut<\/h2>\n<p>It was a solid debut for Fautanu in Denver. Over his 55 snaps, the rookie was especially good in pass protection.<\/p>\n<p>Per PFF, he was charged with just two quarterback pressures and zero sacks. That performance yielded a pass-blocking efficiency score of 95.7, which was better than veteran guard\u00a0James Daniels\u00a0and fill-in guard\u00a0Spencer Anderson.<\/p>\n<p>As a run blocker, Fautanu was not as strong according to PFF\u2019s analytical team, but he wasn\u2019t terrible either. They awarded him with a 59.3 grade in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, Jones did not allow a QB pressure and earned a 60.8 grade as a run blocker. Having said that, three penalties in 11 snaps is absolutely unacceptable, as Tomlin noted.<\/p>\n<p>Jones will likely operate as the swing tackle behind Fautanu and left tackle\u00a0Dan Moore Jr.\u00a0until he\u2019s able to clean up his game.
