he Dallas Cowboys will likely be without the services of tight end Jake Ferguson for Sunday’s season opener against the New Orleans Saints despite the team’s optimism that he would be able to play.<\/p>\n
Ferguson was listed as doubtful for Sunday’s contest with a bone bruise in his left knee after sitting out of practice all week.<\/p>\n
During his weekly appearance on Friday afternoon on the GBag Nation on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones admitted that it would be “a stretch for him to play,” and that they are “taking the conservative route” to get him healthy.<\/p>\n
Jones added that Ferguson “should be able to go next week,” as should reserve tight end John Stephens Jr., who will miss his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury.<\/p>\n
Earlier Friday, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy sounded optimistic about Ferguson’s chances of playing when asked by Shan, RJ and Bobby about the tight end’s status vs. New Orleans.<\/p>\n
“He\u2019s doing well,” McCarthy said on 105.3 The Fan. “He did a little more yesterday. We\u2019ll see how he feels this morning and set a plan. He\u2019s getting close.”<\/p>\n
Ferguson told reporters on Wednesday that the pain in his knee had subsided significantly and appeared to have a positive outlook on his chances of suiting up Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThankfully, just a little bone bruise. I don\u2019t even think it\u2019s a Grade 1,” Ferguson said to\u00a0Jon Machota of the Athletic, amongst others.<\/p>\n
The Cowboys will lean on 2023 second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker and 2024 undrafted free agent Brevyn Spann-Ford at the tight end spot should Ferguson be unable to play.<\/p>\n
“It’ll be a great opportunity for Schoonmaker and Spann-Ford to step up. We’ll (also) bring (Princeton) Fant up (from the practice squad),” Jones said.<\/p>\n
Schoonmaker has struggled since being drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2023 draft. The Michigan product has dealt with injuries that have prevented his growth and only contributed eight catches for 65 yards in 17 games played last season.<\/p>\n
But the Cowboys are ready to see what he can do with a larger role if given the opportunity this Sunday.<\/p>\n
“He’s had some injuries set him back a little bit. I think he just needs to get out there and get some confidence. He played really well last week in all phases. He’s a talented guy, needs a little confidence, and this will be a great opportunity to get it,” Jones said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
