His answers regarding\u00a0Russell Wilson\u00a0and Fields were\u00a0largely the same as they were prior to Week 2.<\/p>\n<p>Those answers came after Tomlin had already explained in the press conference that Wilson is not ready to fully participate in practice to begin preparation for Week 3. So, the Steelers are again planning to start\u00a0Justin Fields on September 22.<\/p>\n<p>But that didn\u2019t stop one reporter from asking another series of follow-up questions on the team\u2019s quarterback situation.<\/p>\n<p>First, Tomlin received a question about whether Wilson still views the quarterback spot as his job. Tomlin told the reporter to ask Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>Then when asked if the team still has a quarterback competition, the Steelers head coach appeared to grow a little annoyed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain, I\u2019ve stated where we are. At the beginning of Week 1, I said it was debatable, and so we were staying status quo, and Russ was in pole position,\u201d\u00a0said Tomlin. \u201cMy position regarding the pecking order and the depth chart has not changed, guys. And it won\u2019t until the other guy gets healthy, and then we\u2019ll give it real consideration. It\u2019s one of the biggest storylines not only for the Steelers but around the league.<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers named\u00a0Wilson their starting quarterback ahead of Week 1, but\u00a0he went on the injury report because of his calf on September 5. That left his status in doubt for the season opener, which Fields eventually started.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Coach Tomlin names Russell Wilson the Steelers starting QB | Pittsburgh Steelers\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7o7hRUBHnt8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Fields started again in Week 2, but Tomlin has repeatedly declined to say whether it will remain that way when Wilson returns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHypotheticals are a waste of time,\u201d\u00a0Tomlin told the media on September 17.<\/p>\n<p>Tomlin won\u2019t need to change his tune until Wilson is healthy, and it\u2019s not clear when exactly that will be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally, we\u2019re kind of in the same posture as we were in last week with Russ. As I sit here today, Russ is not scheduled to be a full participant in practice,\u201d\u00a0Tomlin told reporters. \u201cSo, we\u2019re readying a plan that features Justin and his readiness. We\u2019ll follow Russ throughout the week, and if his participation gets to the level, in participation and quality, that we should consider him, we\u2019ll delve into that at that time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, when that happens is a component in that consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomlin clarified that Wilson will not be a full participant in practice on September 18.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson first injured his calf while pushing a block sled during the first week of training camp. He didn\u2019t play in the first two preseason games, but he returned to play briefly in Week 3 of the preseason.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Mike Tomlin Coins New Hot Dog Euphemism<\/h2>\n<p>Tomlin is known around the NFL as a wordsmith. That was on display again during his latest press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the end of the media session, Tomlin received a question about giving out \u201cpetty\u201d game balls to former\u00a0Denver Broncos players following the Week 2 victory.<\/p>\n<p>It appeared Tomlin briefly smirked at the question, but he declined to talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of your businesses, respectively. There\u2019s certain things that go on among teams that I don\u2019t talk about,\u201d\u00a0Tomlin said. \u201cWhether it gets out or how it gets out is unimportant to me, and I\u2019m not overly guarded against it. But there\u2019s just certain things as a leader that I talk to the collective about that I have zero intentions of sharing with the larger public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomlin then summarized the situation from his perspective with a hot dog metaphor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t give you all the ingredients to the hot dog.
