The Dallas Cowboys have a need at the running back position, but they have another “position,” and it’s about “keeping their powder dry” this season in terms of assets they believe are better-spent next year.<\/p>\n
That fact – which in this parts has come to be known as “Blow It Up\/Remodel” – hasn’t stopped everybody from Shaquille O’Neal (trying to urge team owner Jerry Jones to sign free agent Leonard Fournette) to Robert Griffin III (suggesting Dallas call the New Orleans Saints before the November 5 trade deadline to grab Alvin Kamara) from offering trade concepts.<\/p>\n
Even as we shot it down (see here), Griffin III’s idea has gone viral, and him having offered up the idea of the Cowboys pursuing a trade for running back Kamara has caused fake-news outlets to pretend they have “sources” telling them such a deal is in the works.<\/p>\n
“If the New Orleans Saints continue to stink up the joint these next few weeks, the Dallas Cowboys should see if they are in sell mode and trade for Alvin Kamara,” RGIII writes on Twitter.<\/p>\n
Would that help this football team? No doubt. And we have written pieces that have endorsed the idea of a blockbuster trade as a way to save the season … knowing full-well that is not Dallas’ intention.<\/p>\n
But on Saturday, a young “reporter” suggested on Twitter that he had “sources” and then indicated that Kamara is asking to be dealt and that the Cowboys have made a trade inquiry. … none of which rang true to us.<\/p>\n
We’ve been detailing since February the Dallas plan to “keep its powder dry” in order to “Blow It Up” and remodel next spring. Part of that plan is to carry over this year’s cap room into 2025. So, spending to rent a 29-year-old running back with a 2024 salary of $18 million (not to mention a semi-escapable $29 million cap hit in 2025) is simply not part of Dallas’ equation – as owner Jerry Jones has made frustratingly clear.<\/p>\n
We know this. You know who else knows this? Alvin Kamara himself.<\/p>\n
“I ain’t request a trade,” Kamara writes on Twitter, “so that’s a lie.”<\/p>\n
