But all signs point to veteran\u00a0Russell Wilson\u00a0making his team debut.<\/p>\n<p>Steelers insider Mark Kaboly argued there\u2019s one main reason why the Steelers are probably switching to Wilson despite a 4-2 start with\u00a0Justin Fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussell throws a better ball,\u201d\u00a0said Kaboly on 93.7 The Fan on October 18. \u201cIt just comes out of his hand quicker, faster, more accurate, that whole thing. You could just see it. That\u2019s what I\u2019ve seen for a while now and that\u2019s what I base a lot of things on, just how he throws the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaboly made it clear that the way Wilson throws the ball doesn\u2019t guarantee more success for the offense overall. But Kaboly suggested the advantage Wilson gives the Steelers throwing makes the switch worth the risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re gonna look at it and say you\u2019ll see it,\u201d\u00a0said Kaboly. \u201cI mean, you\u2019ll see it right away and say, \u2018Okay, he\u2019s a better thrower than Justin.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, is he a better overall fit and be able to produce more points? I guess that\u2019s what we\u2019re gonna find out Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson\u2019s delivery was one of his foundations for success early in his career with the\u00a0Seattle Seahawks. In 10 seasons with Seattle,\u00a0Wilson earned\u00a0nine Pro Bowl nominations and led the team to a Super Bowl title.<\/p>\n<p>But the past two seasons, he struggled with the\u00a0Denver Broncos.\u00a0He completed\u00a066.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns with 8 interceptions in 15 starts during 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson last posted a winning record in the 2020 season.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Mike Tomlin Didn\u2019t Official Name Russell Wilson Steelers Starting QB<\/h2>\n<p>Wilson practiced\u00a0with the first-team offense in preparation for Week 7.\u00a0Fields also received and answered\u00a0questions about losing the starting quarterback role.<\/p>\n<p>But officially, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn\u2019t name a starter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to keep that in-house,\u201d Tomlin told the media on October 18,\u00a0via 93.7 The Fan. \u201cI thought [Wilson] was sharp. I thought Justin was sharp as well. I thought we had a highly productive week from both guys, and from the unit as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaboly argued that Tomlin may be hiding who he plans to start at quarterback out of spite to the media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us know that Russell [Wilson] was gonna. Obviously, the Jets knew that Russell was going to start. I mean, if we know, they know, they anticipated,\u201d\u00a0Kaboly said. \u201cHe could label it under gamesmanship, but I think he might have been partly out of spite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Hey, you\u2019re making a big deal out of this? Hey, we\u2019ll make you wait \u2019til Sunday\u2019 type of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But while Tomlin didn\u2019t want to say which quarterback would begin Week 7 behind center, Steelers wide receiver\u00a0George Pickens\u00a0spilled the beans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting on the same page after practice, throwing,\u201d Pickens told reporters,\u00a0via ESPN\u2019s Brooke Pryor. \u201cMore than usual because this is his first start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If that wasn\u2019t enough to confirm the worst kept secret in the league this week,\u00a0NFL Network\u2019s Ian Rapoport reported on October 19 that the Steelers plan to start Wilson in Week 7.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Risks of the Steelers Starting Wilson<\/h2>\n<p>On paper, Wilson appears to present the Steelers a better opportunity to break open their passing attack. With Fields,\u00a0the Steelers are ranked\u00a028th in passing yards this season.<\/p>\n<p>But the quarterback switch comes with risk. Wilson doesn\u2019t have the running ability Fields does, and the Steelers have a banged up offensive line. Against the Jets, the Steelers will start three backup offensive linemen. Two of those backups will start the rest of the season because of injuries to starters.<\/p>\n<p>With the Broncos the past two seasons combined,\u00a0Wilson was sacked\u00a0100 times.<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers also aren\u2019t equipped with elite receivers. So even if Wilson changes his approach from Denver and aims to deliver the ball quickly, there\u2019s no guarantee those wideouts will be able to create the necessary separation.
