The\u00a0Carolina Panthers\u00a0should be an obvious seller, and they have a wideout\u00a0averaging\u00a06 catches and 76.5 receiving yards with 3 touchdowns over the past four games.<\/p>\n<p>That sounds like a match made in heaven. The issue is that receiver is\u00a0Diontae Johnson\u00a0\u2014 a player that,\u00a0by NFL rule, the Steelers cannot acquire via trade this season.<\/p>\n<p>The question of whether Johnson can return to Pittsburgh surfaced when Bleacher Report\u2019s Kristopher Knox named the Steelers a potential suitor for Johnson on October 16.<\/p>\n<div class=\"intersectionObserverRefElement\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe Steelers might want to try reacquiring Johnson, whom they traded to Carolina for cornerback Donte Jackson in the offseason,\u201d\u00a0wrote Knox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"intersectionObserverRefElement\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAccording to ESPN\u2019s\u00a0Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers had a \u201cstrong interest\u201d in Adams, who is now off the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last season in Pittsburgh,\u00a0Johnson posted\u00a051 catches for 717 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns in 13 games. He had 391 receptions, 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns over five seasons with the Steelers.<\/p>\n<p>Through six weeks, he\u2019s on pace for more than 80 catches and 950 receiving yards along with a career high in receiving touchdowns in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Knox concluded\u00a0that Johnson would be \u201cat worst\u201d a \u201cquality second target\u201d in another NFL offense.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0under league rules, the Steelers are not eligible to trade for Johnson before the 2024 NFL trade deadline because\u00a0they traded\u00a0Johnson to the Panthers in March.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-youtube-com\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Play\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kg3AO8PkNpI?autoplay=1\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Could the Steelers Realistically Target Diontae Johnson in a Trade?<\/h2>\n<p>It would be very odd to see the Steelers trade for Johnson about seven months after they shipped him to the Panthers. As it turns out, it\u2019s not permitted.<\/p>\n<p>In March,\u00a0the Steelers sent Johnson to the Panthers\u00a0for cornerback\u00a0Donte Jackson. Pundits were critical of the move for the Steelers when it occurred. But Jackson has played well,\u00a0leading the team\u00a0with 6 pass defenses and 3 interceptions.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Panthers benched\u00a0Bryce Young\u00a0for\u00a0Andy Dalton\u00a0at quarterback, Johnson has also shinned. The veteran receiver has surpassed 75 yards and scored a touchdown in three of his past four games.<\/p>\n<p>With the Panthers falling out of the NFC South because of their 1-5 record, Johnson could find himself on the trade block the next couple weeks. Even if he is, though, the Steelers cannot reacquire him.<\/p>\n<p>NFL Network\u2019s Ian Rapoport posted\u00a0a picture from the league rulebook on September 30. In the picture, the rulebook read, \u201ca player who has been traded cannot return to the club that took such action until two seasons have elapsed, including the season of the year in which he left the club.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are two exceptions to this rule. Both of the exceptions involve the traded player being waived or released by the team he was traded to.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s obviously not the case with Johnson and doesn\u2019t figure to be. The veteran receiver is playing well for the Panthers, and the team could trade him for future draft capital.<\/p>\n<div class=\"intersectionObserverRefElement\">\n<p>Therefore, it\u2019s highly unlikely the Steelers can target Johnson as a potential secondary target for their passing attack.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-youtube-com\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Play\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d_-0jFRVytQ?autoplay=1\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Are the Panthers Interested in Trading Diontae Johnson?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>The question of whether the Steelers will explore reacquiring Johnson is a moot point. But it is also not clear if the Panthers are interested in trading Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>On October 2,\u00a0Panthers head coach Dave Canales stated that he doesn\u2019t \u201csee that happening\u201d when asked about potentially dealing Johnson for draft capital.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0the compensation teams received\u00a0this week in exchange for veteran wide receivers, the Panthers could always change their minds.\u00a0Johnson will be\u00a0an unrestricted free agent next March.<\/p>\n<p>But for now, Johnson doesn\u2019t appear to be on the trade block.
