The Baltimore Ravens dumped two draft picks to make room for a Pro Bowl signing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
His stay with the\u00a0Baltimore Ravens\u00a0has been prolonged, but\u00a0Yannick Ngakoue\u00a0officially joining the active roster has come at the expense of one of the team\u2019s picks from the 2023 NFL draft.<\/p>\n
Offensive lineman\u00a0Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu\u00a0a sixth-round pick a year ago, was waived on Tuesday, October 15, the same day Ngakoue\u2019s updated status was made official. A busy day for the Ravens also saw them release defensive back\u00a0Damarion Williams, a 2022 fourth-rounder,\u00a0per ESPN\u2019s Jamison Hensley.<\/p>\n
The latter move is potentially significant because it means \u201cBaltimore now has two open practice squad spots,\u201d according to\u00a0Ravens.com Editorial Director Ryan Mink.<\/p>\n
Given how quickly Ngakoue turned a spot on the practice squad into a niche role with the first-team defense, the Ravens have two good opportunities to add more veteran help at key positions.<\/p>\n
Yannick Ngakoue Earned Permanent Spot<\/h2>\n
Ngakoue\u00a0wasted no time\u00a0contributing to the pass rush after initially signing with the practice squad on September 24. The 29-year-old got on the field against the\u00a0Cincinnati Bengals\u00a0in Week 5 and immediately made his presence felt.<\/p>\n
Justifiably proud of his efforts at Paycor Stadium, Ngakoue posted this message on X above a video of a nifty spin move and hit on Bengals\u2019 quarterback\u00a0Joe Burrow. The caption read, \u201cNo steps lost. God is good.\u201d<\/p>\n
This rep showed Ngakoue, a Pro Bowler in 2017, the same year he led the league in forced fumbles, hadn\u2019t lost a step. His enduring ability to put heat on the pocket showed up again against the\u00a0Washington Commanders in Week 6.<\/p>\n
Ngakoue got to rookie\u00a0Jayden Daniels\u00a0for a sack. It was the signature play of another game when Ngakoue was regularly in the face of the passer,\u00a0something highlighted by Mink.<\/p>\n

The Ravens have moved quickly to tie down a proven pass-rusher who offers credible support to\u00a0Kyle Van Noy,\u00a0Odafe Oweh\u00a0and\u00a0David Ojabo\u00a0on the edge. It\u2019s another example of general manager Eric DeCosta\u2019s smart use of the veteran market. Just like the\u00a0deal to bring\u00a0All-Pro safety\u00a0Eddie Jackson to M&T Bank Stadium during training camp.<\/p>\n
DeCosta now has the flexibility to revisit the free-agency well.<\/p>\n
Damarion Williams, Roster Moves Give Ravens Flexibility<\/h2>\n
It\u2019s somewhat surprising Williams was\u00a0released so soon after returning\u00a0to the Ravens. His versatility to play on the perimeter or in the slot would\u2019ve been useful in a secondary struggling mightily through six games.<\/p>\n
The Ravens have surrendered\u00a08.1 yards per pass attempt, 1,789 yards through the air and 28 completions of 20-plus yards. All three are league-high marks.<\/p>\n
Having two open slots on the practice squad means DeCosta could roll the dice on a veteran cover man like\u00a0J.C. Jackson,\u00a0Patrick Peterson\u00a0or\u00a0Jalen Mills. There\u2019s\u00a0no shortage of free agents\u00a0who can help.<\/p>\n
Similar assistance isn\u2019t needed along an offensive line that\u2019s solidified in recent weeks. A group featuring newcomers like guards\u00a0Patrick Mekari\u00a0and\u00a0Daniel Faalele, as well as rookie right tackle\u00a0Roger Rosengarten, has developed chemistry and continuity.<\/p>\n
The Ravens now have a familiar front five that\u2019s also underpinned by solid depth, thanks to\u00a0Andrew Vorhees\u00a0and\u00a0Ben Cleveland.
