The New York Yankees might be looking for a third baseman this winter. Could Alex Bregman be a realistic landing option for the Bombers?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
The\u00a0New York Yankees\u00a0are inching closer to their\u00a0first World Series appearance since 2009. But that doesn\u2019t mean preparations for the 2025 roster aren\u2019t also happening while the Bombers play\u00a0in the ALCS. Could third baseman Alex Bregman be a fit for New York in free agency this winter?<\/p>\n
While the Yankees might need someone new to play third base,\u00a0Bleacher Report\u2019s Joel Reuter named\u00a0them as the \u201cworst landing spot\u201d for the right-handed slugger.<\/p>\n
\u201cCan you imagine? The bad blood between the Astros and Yankees stemming from the sign-stealing scandal could make the idea of signing Bregman a non-starter,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, it\u2019s interesting to consider how he might be received by the fanbase, and the Yankees do have a clear need at third base.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bregman has spent the last nine seasons with the\u00a0Houston Astros.\u00a0He\u2019s been selected\u00a0to two All-Star Games while winning one Silver Slugger Award and two World Series titles. The third baseman finished a\u00a0five-year, $100 million extension\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n
Spotrac is pegging\u00a0Bregman\u2019s market value at four years and $119 million. However, fellow third baseman Matt Chapman\u00a0getting a $151 million extension\u00a0with the\u00a0San Francisco Giants\u00a0will likely be the starting point in negotiations for agent Scott Boras.\u00a0Bleacher Report\u2019s Zachary D. Rymer predicted on August 1 that Bregman would land a seven-year, $210 million contract.<\/p>\n
Alex Bregman Is a Fit for the Yankees on Paper<\/h2>\n
Based on the Yankees\u2019 anticipated 2025 roster construction, they might need a third baseman. Bregman would seemingly be a natural fit.<\/p>\n
\u201cAssuming they let Gleyber Torres walk in free agency, Jazz Chisholm Jr. can slide back to his natural position at second base, leaving a hole at third base that should not be filled by DJ LeMahieu again,\u201d\u00a0Reuter said.<\/p>\n
Torres\u00a0made $14.2 million\u00a0in 2024 and will hit free agency this winter. He\u2019s\u00a0previously stated a desire\u00a0to stay in the Bronx. However, it\u2019s unknown how motivated general manager Brian Cashman is to retain the infielder. However, acquiring Jazz Chisholm Jr.\u00a0at the trade deadline gives the Yankees options.<\/p>\n
Chisholm has been mostly playing third base since landing in New York. But he spent his first three big-league seasons\u00a0primarily playing second base\u00a0for the\u00a0Miami Marlins. His defensive versatility gives the Yankees flexibility to pursue different kinds of players to fill out the infield.<\/p>\n
Bregman rebounded from a tough start to his 2024 campaign to hit .260\/.315\/.453 with 26 home runs, 75 RBI and 79 runs scored in 634 plate appearances. He mostly plays every day and has plenty of postseason experience.<\/p>\n
But then again, how current players feel about the Astros\u2019 sign-stealing scandal is unknown.\u00a0Aaron Judge commented\u00a0on it in February 2020 and said Houston\u2019s 2017 World Series title holds no value because they cheated.<\/p>\n
Will the Astros Let Alex Bregman Leave via Free Agency?<\/h2>\n
On the flip side of his article, Reuter picked the Astros as Bregman\u2019s best landing spot this winter.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Astros do need to consider how they want to distribute available funds with Kyle Tucker and Framber Valdez both headed for free agency after the 2025 season, but if they are still committed to winning with the current core, keeping Bregman is a must,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n
Second baseman Jose Altuve has also started lobbying for his longtime teammate to return on a new contract. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to be the same organization without him,\u201d Altuve said on October 2\u00a0via ESPN\u2019s Alden Gonzalez. \u201cIn my mind, there\u2019s not a chance this is the last one [game together].\u201d<\/p>\n
Gonzalez also noted\u00a0that before the Astros were eliminated in the Wild Card Series, Houston general manager Dana Brown sounded optimistic about re-signing Bregman. \u201cI think it\u2019ll work out,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you get down to it, I think he [Bregman] wants to stay here.
