Derrick Henry doesn’t want to talk about the Baltimore Ravens “finishing move.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
The\u00a0Baltimore Ravens\u00a0have a \u201cfinishing move\u201d to put teams away, but\u00a0Derrick Henry\u00a0wants to keep it quiet. He\u2019s applied the coup de gra\u010de the last two weeks on what\u2019s become a signature play for the NFL\u2019s best rushing attack.<\/p>\n
Henry was asked about the play, a \u201ctoss left\u201d after he helped the Ravens beat the\u00a0Washington Commanders\u00a030-23 in Week 6. The two-time rushing champion simply answered, \u201cShhhh!!,\u201d according to\u00a0Ravens.com Editorial Director Ryan Mink.<\/p>\n
Henry\u2019s reticence to go into detail about the Ravens\u2019 go-to move is understandable. It\u2019s salted away two-straight games, both wins, over the Commanders and\u00a0Cincinnati Bengals.<\/p>\n
As\u00a0Mink pointed out, \u201cToss left to Derrick Henry has been the Ravens\u2019 finishing move the past two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those gains, 51 yards in overtime in Cincinnati, and 27 yards to break the will of the Commanders at M&T Bank Stadium, show why this play is the Ravens\u2019 closer. Offensive coordinator Todd Monken has crafted a design that fools defenses and gets Henry out into space.<\/p>\n
Notice how Henry runs away from the strength of the formation. The two-tight end side featuring\u00a0Mark Andrews\u00a0(89) and\u00a0Isaiah Likely\u00a0(80).<\/p>\n
Another wrinkle involves slot receiver\u00a0Nelson Agholor\u00a0(15) executing a crack-back block on the play-side defensive end. This block lets left tackle\u00a0Ronnie Stanley\u00a0(79) get to the second level and absorb the nearest linebacker.<\/p>\n
Agholor and Stanley collapse the edge, leaving 300-pound fullback Patrick Ricard to look for work ahead of Henry. This is top-level stuff from Monken. The play is also the staple every successful running game needs.<\/p>\n
Think the\u00a0outside zone-stretch\u00a0for the\u00a0San Francisco 49ers\u00a0and every member of the Shanahan coaching tree. There\u2019s also the\u00a0counter trey\u00a0from the glory days of Joe Gibbs and \u2018The Hogs\u2019 in Washington. Or the\u00a0lead draw\u00a0that made Emmitt Smith a star for the\u00a0Dallas Cowboys\u00a0in the nineties.<\/p>\n
Now the Ravens have their own tone-setter and game-sealer. Both things are made possible by Henry, who is helping dual-threat quarterback\u00a0Lamar Jackson take an already potent Baltimore ground attack to the next level.<\/p>\n
Henry\u2019s arrival has Jackson\u00a0playing his best football, but the Ravens\u2019 QB1 has also made his backfield mate better. Defenses aware of Jackson\u2019s skills as a runner aren\u2019t giving Henry their full focus, and that\u2019s all 22 needs to make them pay.<\/p>\n
The clutch run to beat the Commanders was a great example of how the Jackson and Henry dynamic is putting defenses in a bind each week. As\u00a0Pro Football Network\u2019s Theo Ash\u00a0highlighted, \u201cthe threat of Lamar Jackson affects the second level of the Washington defense.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jackson\u2019s mobility has always made the Ravens a threat running the ball, but he\u2019s never had a back as talented as Henry for support. The difference is obvious, with the Ravens topping the league charts with\u00a01,232 yards and averaging 5.9 yards per carry.<\/p>\n
Henry and Jacksons\u2019s combination is also helping the Ravens put together another all-time streak of consecutive 100-yard games on the deck, per\u00a0Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus.<\/p>\n
