In fact, according to team owner Jerry Jones, no one really is dumbfounded at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an exaggeration. \u2018Dumbfounded\u2019 is an exaggeration,\u201d\u00a0Jones said\u00a0on the Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan this week. \u201cIt mischaracterizes \u2014 it\u2019s a bad description of how he feels about things. He\u2019s very much aware of the part of the running game that he\u2019s involved with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report in question comes from veteran Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill, who has been covering the team for the better part of three decades. After Elliott talked to reporters this week,\u00a0Hill wrote on Twitter\/X:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott confirmed he has talked to the coaches about his role and remains dumbfounded by his lack of opportunities at least as red zone back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe dumbfounded is, indeed, an exaggeration. But there is no doubt that the Cowboys have been steadily moving away from Elliott when arranging priorities in the team\u2019s running-back \u201ccommittee.\u201d After Elliott and\u00a0Rico Dowdle split carries for the first two weeks of the season, the last two weeks have seen Dowdle take on the lion\u2019s share of the carries.<\/p>\n<p>He has had just 11 carries in the last two weeks, while Dowdle has had 31.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Ezekiel Elliott Spoke With Cowboys Coaches<\/h2>\n<p>Elliott spoke with reporters and noted that he has gone to see coaches to try to figure out where, exactly, he fits in. The Cowboys have been using the passing game and fullback Hunter Luepke more and more in short-yardage situations.<\/p>\n<p>The expectation was that, even if Elliott\u2019s carries dropped, he would still be called upon to convert third-and-short situations. But that has not been the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked a little bit,\u201d Elliott said,\u00a0via the Dallas Morning News. \u201cBut kinda let it play itself out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went on: \u201cI just focus on being a good teammate. I\u2019ve been focusing on continuing to help lead this team and I\u2019m not making it about me, it\u2019s about this football team (winning) football games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elliott, of course, played the first seven years of his career with the Cowboys, and was a Pro Bowler three times. But he began to slow down and the team let him walk in free agency last season, when he joined the Patriots.<\/p>\n<p>With the Cowboys failing to draft a running back and allowing\u00a0Tony Pollard\u00a0to leave in free agency, the team brought back Elliott on a minimum deal in April.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Cowboys \u2018Saving\u2019 Zeke for Later?<\/h2>\n<p>After shooting down the report that Elliott was \u201cdumfounded\u201d by his lack of reps, Jones went on to say that the plan for the Cowboys is to preserve Elliott for later in the NFL season. That is an odd strategy, given the fact that the lack of a running game here in the early season is adding pressure on quarterback Dak Prescott.<\/p>\n<p>But Jones pointed to Dowdle\u2019s injury history as one reason to be cautious with Elliott.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t emphasize this enough: We\u2019re saving him,\u201d\u00a0Jones said,\u00a0via CBS Sports. \u201cAnd we should be. We want him for \u2014 Rico [Dowdle] is an outstanding running back. \u2026 [but] his big problem has been what? He\u2019s had trouble with injuries throughout his career.
