The San Francisco 49ers should be on the phone with Robert Saleh right now.
Saleh was let go by the New York Jets just five games into the season.
A crisis is often an opportunity, and with the Niners’ defense struggling, it didn’t take long before the fans wondered whether they could work something out.
Nevertheless, that’s not going to be the case.
As pointed out by Michael Silver on X, Saleh has no plans of joining any team this season, should an opportunity arise.
Instead, he’s going to regroup, go on vacation with his family, and prepare for the upcoming coaching cycle, as he should be a highly-coveted asset as a defensive coordinator.
Saleh’s defense in San Francisco was one of the best in recent years.
The Niners have had some elite defensive coordinators in the past, but first-year DC Nick Sorensen has left something to be desired five weeks into the season.
They also have Brandon Staley as an assistant head coach to give Sorensen a helping hand, but the pairing hasn’t been as successful thus far.
Saleh didn’t do a great job as a head coach, at least numbers-wise, but the Jets constantly had one of the best defenses in the league under his tutelage.
At the end of the day, some coaches aren’t cut to be head coaches, and that’s perfectly fine.
Given his résumé, there will most definitely be several teams lining up to try and get him to fix their defenses in 2025.
