PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers got some much-needed good new as outside linebacker Alex Highsmith practiced for the first time since suffering a groin strain against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Pittsburgh has also lost both DeMarvin Leal and Nick Herbig to injury, leaving them with T.J. Watt and Jeremiah Moon as edge guys on the active roster. Isaiahh Loudermilk will see some work on the edge, while Ade Ogundeji and Eku Leota will compete to see who gets the practice squad elevation this week.
Highsmith said this is the first step in his return from injury, and while he will not play against the Las Vegas Raiders, he does expect to play against the New York Jets. That would put Highsmith on track for a return for the two games before the bye week.
He did individual drills on Thursday, so he will be listed as a limited participant on the practice report.
